Beavis: Hi. Just a very slight change of subject. I am on the $79 plan and it is going well. However, about a week ago I noticed that dishy is now pointing north. An exact 180 degree change of direction. Still goes fine, in fact seems better. Have been getting latency in the high 20s quite often. As I am at the bottom of the South Island, seems crazy that it is not pointing south to use those satellites that are way out at sea with no one using them. People on Facebook are reporting a change to north for some people. Seems to be mainly people in the South Island but not a scientific survey!
Any comments?
A neighbour who has his dishy stuck on the ground on the south side of the house not impressed. I told him months ago it was a bad idea. Went like rubbish until he dragged it further away from house.

Just checked and mine is pointing south, but only slightly, it's almost pointing straight up with a slight angle south. I'm on the banks of peninsula in the SI.

Also yes ground mount isn't great. I had outage every few minutes when testing but now mounted on the roof I haven't seen one yet

Maybe there is lots of traffic from SI locations and some of the SI Downlinks are getting close to capacity, so they are moving some traffic to satellites that are using the NI downlinks, ??

Just installed a Gen3 dish and testing it out on the deprioritised plan. Using my existing WiFi modem connected to Starlink in bypass mode. Good speeds around the advertised for a standard plan of 250ish Mbps, who knows what it will be in the future.

As for sky coverage, my dish was orientated SSW using the app, I thought that would be a problem as due South seemed to be the prevailing opinion, and that is roughly the way my roof lies. The correct orientation put the dish pointing at the roof as a due South orientation was marginal anyway. However it turned out not to be a problem as coverage is mainly to the North as the illustration below shows, I'm assuming the blue is satellite tracking, the solid area filled in over time. Waimak area.

Looking forward to a week of testing, what movie will I watch tonight? 😀

Just tested on my parents connection. 365down 32up 20ms ping. Yep very deprioritised indeed :)

I'll need to test in e evening though, as I'm guessing that's when it may have more bearing.

Evening speeds: 200/30 23ms
Speeds aways good at my parents, not an overly populated area. There are certainly other areas that speed is lower.

Those speeds more than meet my requirements, ad beat my current 4G system by a long shot. What area are your parents in?

So here is something interesting... Wonder if they using the router to set the plan?

I ran a couple speedtest to verify. Over the course of 2 or so hours and it remains more or less the same difference.

Speed test directly connected to starlink router:

Speed test connected to my Mikrotik I now added to act as my main router....

@Silvrav. My guess is that you are connected by WiFi and that it is using the 2.4 Ghz band - I had exactly the same issue, and it took a wee while for the penny to drop. 5 GHz as plenty of headroom to test Starlink speeds. My average download speed is 323 Mbps over the last week.

Problem is that with my modem WiFi router, both bands have similar dB strength when sitting right next to the modem WiFi router. If I move away and the phone drops to 2.4 Ghz, it will not go back to 5 GHz when I move closer. The only way to force it is by turning the phone WiFi off and on again. Haven't bothered testing it with the laptops. For normal stuff, it seems to matter buggerall to general browsing. After using xDSL for decades, I'm pretty happy.

Edit: terminology fixed.

I thought so as well but then i set up dedicated 5ghz channels for both to test. The starlink app also only shows around 150mbs. Next I want to test is wired to verify.

Edit, I think the starlink 5ghz is not true 5ghz or it's a bug as wired it gives the higher speeds.

When initially setting up I speed tested the Starlink directly using it's 5 GHz WiFi. My system is now my old Fritz!Box 7530 hardwired to Starlink in bypass mode. There is no difference in speed between the two systems when using Ookla Speedtest on either the 5 GHz or hardwired connections.

I must be the only one to notice a change when switching to the deprioritised plan. I immediately noticed buffering when watching YouTube or Netflix at night time. We have 3 kids all streaming at the same time etc. No issues before the switch. So I switched back and no buffering again. Based in Pukekohe area.

Ran a few tests since midday, Waimak area:

Edit: My table got scrambled, now in plain text hopefully. Preview looked fine.

Download Speed, Upload Speed Mbps

Max: 466, 36

Min: 104, 12

Mean: 294, 24

Median: 306, 23

Number of tests: 15

Testing:

Ookla speed test app Android, connected to Voyager Wellington, on Galaxy S21 Ultra, 5 GHZ Wi-Fi through Fritz!Box 7530, ethernet to Starlink v3 in bypass mode.

Starlink now out of the 30 day trial period by a couple of days. I have noticed that the speed does fluctuate, sometimes by almost a factor of 2 within minutes. It tends to be a drop then recovery type thing. Generally the speed is good, no long periods at low speeds. Time will tell.

A friend wants to sign up for the deprioritized (now Residential Lite) plan, but when clicking any of the order buttons on this page, only the standard $159/mth plan is shown on the subsequent order page. Both the Lite ($79) and Std ($159) are shown on the linked page. I've submitted a ticket in my account, but was wondering if anyone else is having the same issue?

Pardon my cynicism, but I wouldn't raise a ticket from my account asking about a plan not being listed (or incorrectly listed). The help desk person on the other side might assume you want to change your plan and act on it...

Yea it seems to have disappeared for new orders but I can still see it in the app and can switch to it.

Oh I do hope not! One of the negatives of going to Starlink was/is the lack of support - no telephone support for NZ that I can find. Still, if it does get changed, at least CYaBro reckons the Lite is still available in the app.

We may all moan about Spark etc support, but at least they do have a phone number - and a long wait.
