I just saw that there is now a cheaper plan available for Starlink owners in NZ, a deprioritized service for residential customers at one location.

Standard: 150-250 Mbps   @ $159/Month

Deprioritized Standard: 50-100 Mbps   @ $79/Month

Look like an interesting option for some people. My main usage of youtube is not too heavy so I think I'll probably give it a try

Hmm, very interesting. I wonder what kind of speeds that will get. Certainly, very cheap offering.

Whats the ability to kick it back to fast speeds if needed like?

Might be good to keep it there as a backup connection.

I'd say like the others, you just do a plan change. If it's to a higher plan, it activates straight away, and you pay the part month difference. A plan change down happens on bill cycle.

Guess who lives in the one single waitlist hex in the whole country. Guess its not meant to be. Anyway the fibre has been rock solid since they have stopped working in the street all the time on it so probably dont need something right now.

Great news as absolutely perfect for me as I'm about to have fibre installed (even though rural and up a 800m driveway, thanks to https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/country/462118/govt-to-fund-rural-broadband-network-upgrades) I'll be keeping Starlink as a backup connection.

50-100 mbps will be fine for 90% of folk

I am on 950/500 now and the only time I ever get close to that is when downloading large ISOs

Most of the time my connection idles at 10-15mbps with streaming

This certainly adds an interesting element to options for failover services, with copper-based services being retired and starlink often coming in a fair price more than a LTE/5G service generally see that route being taken, but at this price for the speed and latency that's pretty compelling and far less likely to be congested - be it at a more expensive cost for the hardware.

Gosh, this sure does look tempting. Probably just going to keep this in the back pocket if VDSL starts acting up again (especially since it's only back to grin and bear it stage as it stands), but it's at least a reasonable alternative now.

What's the latency like these days?

Starlink is about 60ms which is on par with 4G but higher than VDSL and Fibre

We have 4G Wireless BB in Peka Peka ,Kapiti through Spark, as no fibre is available.

Top speeds are better than this, but the reliability seems to be getting worse, and the speeds get below 20 at night

Would you think this service is likely to be materially better? The other option is to try One.NZ who get a stronger signal on my phone at least when compared to Skinny via dual sim

Peka Peka has 3 VDSL cabinets along the road out to the beach, you should be able to get 50+ MBPS on VDSL anywhere along there
