maverick: Sorry but I really see this as almost funny, having to overlay copper to provide phone services and now it seems a dispensation to allow Telecom to deploy services if their is overhead copper as its the only way they can deliver UFB or should I say UFB / Copper hybrid.
Sorry if it seems as though I'm taking a cheap shot but it really concerns me when I see NZ's largest Telco struggling in the IP World and it appears no clear direction on how to deploy large scale residential services, they have had years to get ready for this.
Too bloody right. When did the BoF subdivisions start to get done? Telecom should have been well on the ball by now.
Maybe bean counters see more mileage in the NEAX's yet, they have all had recent CPU upgrades and line card overhauls, so they arent going away anytime soon.
Telecom should have had a voip platform (one not tied to the ISAM equipment in exchanges) ages ago given the de-merger of Chorus.
The bean counters are thinking short term no doubt, milk the profitable POTS customers as long as possible before cannibalizing their own customers with a voip offering. Clearly a voip offering won't be as profitable ye olde landlines so they are holding out.
Problem is the longer they delay the more market share Snap, Xnet and others nab.
The fact that Crown Fibre and chorus/other LFC's are allowing overhead copper to be used shows Telecom still has strong lobbying power!

although there are benefits of voip, i don't think there's any reason to be hasty about these things. and i think it's reasonable to allow hybrid cables with both.

Trying to get any info out of Vodafone is impossible. Despite there being at least two other providers in the area, their roll out for UFB packages is still unknown it would seem. Not even an update, just keeping their existing customers in the dark...! Presume there's another thread on that somewhere.... Theo

I imagine Vodafone are pretty busy sorting out what to do with all the stuff they accquired via the Telstraclear's purchase, UFB and VDSL are probably down the priority list for them atm.
