I prefer places without a phone number since they cant just take the easy way out on the ticket to tell you to call or go to a store like the telcos love to do.

EDIT: Ha! After posting, checked Starlink and the $79 Lite is now available - and my neighbour signed up 😃.

Had a reply from Starlink and the Lite Service "may be at maximum capacity". They suggested checking regularly in case they update capacity and the Lite service becomes available again. It is still shown on the main Starlink Residential page, so I guess it may come back - possibly.

Noticed a NZ Herald article stating that Starlink had grown from 12k to 37k NZ customers over the past 12 months, so I guess that will have a bearing.

Also notice Chorus plugging Starlink. My understanding was that in areas that are not served by fibre, copper/ADSL would remain an option, but with services like Starlink available, I wonder if that will last.

@u13turbo. Speeds are still good, although have dropped a bit, say in the 200-250 Mbps range, sometimes a bit less.

$79 plan works great for me. Only me in household, but never ever had a problem streaming anything. YouTube in 4K clips is excellent.

Also should disclose I am in Southland which probably doesn’t have the congestion of up north.

Just found out from contractors walking up our road that fibre is coming down our road in 3 months… so common sense says I will join up.

That's a comment from someone who doesn't even have the service and has just used it 'while travelling'... The fact that it couldn't buffer enough for 240p indicates there was probably some other issue there with the setup. The service can run very poorly if you dont position the dish with an unobstructed view of the sky. In very heavy rain it may suffer some intermittency (eg, come and go for a few seconds). On top of that all the usual local network issues you may get with any type of connection can cause performance problems.

I've been on the deprioritised plan for 6 months now. I have two households streaming in at least 1080p at peak times and it's fine. Should add that I am in rural Northland so the experience is probably better than urban service.

I had to RDP over a connection a while ago, and while it speedtested ok, and gave reasonable numbers in pings, the actual usage experience was like using congested DSL with things lagging for 4-5 keystrokes constantly, dragging windows around looking showing the lag the worst. No issues playing back buffered content on the likes of netflix or similar, never tried actual streaming. Never tried VoWIFI on it either, and those are I expect the worst would be seen/heard.

Generally no issues using Starlink for streaming. There were some areas around the country that use to be noticeably slower than others, but probably not so much now. The US, still lots of congested areas, which is probably where you get most of the poor performance comments from.

Great, thanks for the replies. Neighbour has the full rate plan and has had zero issues, I was just wondering if the deprioritised plan made any real difference, appears not.
