Hello all,

My house I have been building will be completed in the next few weeks.
So I rung snap to get them to do a prequal check on my line for VDSL2 and it came back that I could not get VDSL2.

I guess it seems a tad strange seeing as the house a few down from mine can get it with an estimated 5db attenuation.

Anyone know the reasoning as to why this could be?

Cable to cabinet isn't always in a straight line, yours might be looping around neighbouring streets which means you'll end up with 1km of cable rather than 200m.

Yes it just seems strange that number 13 at 5db on the street can get it but I can not at number 20.

Being a new street I would have thought they would have wired it better.

Thanks myfullflavor I will PM you

Or I can check in the Chorus coverage maps, as that shows the shape file available.  Sounds to me like the cabinet may be on the wrong side of the street and the cables going the wrong way.

Plus SNAP (like all other RSPs) are bound to ensure that the prequal meets the minimum spec, otherwise Chorus won't let them install.

I've submitted another pre-qual just in case.

You also could get creative and do what a couple of other clients have done - 2x Ubiquiti NanoBridge units between address A that has VDSL and address B that can't get it...

Im doing exactly that to get UFB to my new place in massey. Using two ubiquitu m5's over about 1.2km and i get a little less than 100mbits throughput. whats more a vodafone guy came knocking on my door with a "great deal" i told him i what i had done and he was quick to move on.

Which part of Massey are you in.  I'm looking for a similar solution.

This is awesome. I'd say you're one of the first (possibly the first?) to try this trick with UFB? Excluding all WISPs who are using UFB for cheap backhaul...

Thought I would post an update in this.

I was correct chorus was testing from the exchange not the cabinet, my line rate now that I have moved in  should be fine.

Hopefully upgrading to VDSL once they do another prequal on Monday through myfullflavor (who have been excellent)

Instead of starting a new topic, can I jump on the bandwagon and get a check on my address for VDSL ?
