https://www.speedtest.net has upgraded their interface and now collects stats.  I have my doubts about the accuracy of the results, however.  It seems that New Plymouth is the place to be for a hot internet connection:

I doubt those results as well. I just topped those with Orcon in Dunedin

I believe they are averages, so you're above average for Orcon (and Dunedin).

Ah well if I sit here for a while doing some speedtests hopefully I can mess with their averages

Interestingly the Ping Time (Latency) they are reporting has dropped from around 70-80ms prior to the interface revamp to around 40 or 45ms now.

I can't believe anything in the Intarweb has changed that significantly in the space of a week...

It makes you wonder which are the correct figures:  Old version or New Version?

The reported speed results also seem to vary a lot more than previously Undecided

Hmm my ping time has always been around that mark. But I have interleaving turned off...

Yeah, I have interleaving turned off as well since I switched to WxC last week.

I have noticed that my VNC sessions are more responsive with more fluid mouse pointer movement.

So...  40ms looks like the correct result then Cool

Cheers Brad

Their ping times were in beta previously so presumably they've changed the way they measure it somehow now.

Well my ping times a bit lame @ 125-180ms.

If they are working on an average then would this average be spread across all customers, so the number of slow 256/128 would pull down the speed of the fill-speed/128 users?

I always wonder if the location's are accurate.
If i am not mistaken, arent the ip addresses dished out by our ISP's shared between all national users of that specific isp? If so then how would it associate our computers with a specific city? Or do they have a list of ip's specific to each city?

They use the MaxMind IP address database, apparently.  Try http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_my_ip to see where they think you are.  They got my address as Ngauranga (wrong) - presumably because TCL have something based there???

If you're interested, you can download the "lite" version of their IP address data, create your own database, or use their own via an API.

They look at the information published by the ISP in the whois database for IP address ranges allocated by APNIC. I am in Palmerston North... how embarrassing. :)

Likewise, people using T3G will be listed as being in Virginia, US.

If you want to check the ping times accuracy, use ping, tracert and pathping; then look at the next hop from your router, not the last one in the chain, to get an idea of the connection latency.

I now very much doubt the accuracy of the location averages. Apparantly I am in Bombay, which is a fair distance from Napier.

Are you sure you haven't been secretly out-sourced to India?

Lol. Probably. Although I think it may mean the Bombay area south of Auckland
