A friend of mine is on a waiting list and getting adsl from his neighbour half a km down the road via wifi link, the neighbour is connected to the conklin at the top of the road, (Jordan Road, Kaukapakapa), sync speed approx 7.5mbits down 900kbits up adsl1.  Recently the broadband has been so unreliable its just useless trying to do anything on it, even in the early hours its bad so we're assuming its the backlink on the conklin or something else.  It used to run quite reliably with obvious slow downs during peak hours, but recently its just not worth paying for anymore.  According to slingshot, chorus has been messing with the "profiles" hence one month was waived off the bill due to the very poor service.  What im wanting to know, is it possible to get connected directly to the Kaukapakapa exchange?  The distance is 9km directly to the exchange, but im assuming chorus has policies in place, like with vdsl and will reject a connection, even though it could possibly work but with a very slow sync speed.

The other option is a wifi link to shelly beach directly across the kaipara harbour, does anyone know if shelly beach is fed with fibre or that place fed with conklins too?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

There is no way to "bypass" the Conklin. If you did you wouldn't have internet.

You're within a Wireless RBI coverage area and it doesn't look like there will be any further DSL upgrades in your area - the wireless RBI is your Broadband solution.

I just had a look at vodafones rbi plans, and they're highly expensive with limited data compared with fixed line broadband, cellphone reception there is also very patchy on vodafone.  Telecom slightly better.

edit: We can see the top of the road and SH16, im assuming the properties along SH16 would be connected directly to exchange?

Anything over 2km is normally a big no.

There are various providers for RBI Wireless some cheaper than others. There may also be a local WISP.

Uhhh it's typically 5km to my knowledge.  But you can't guarantee 5km by road, is 5km by copper.

Edit: Unless you prehaps meant ADSL2 speeds?

Unfortunately RBI cabinets are a bit far out. You'd need a several KM wifi link over a good line of sight and a friend at the other end for these to be useful. From a quick look at the geography i cant see this happening.

We can see the main road SH16 and from there Waiatarua can be seen, however there is some significantly elevated terrain between us and the main centre of kaukapakapa.  Theres another option I have been looking at: Getting adsl2/vdsl from someone elevated close to the exchange and bouncing a wifi link over the hills, might need around 3 to 4 hops and will involve being friendly with several people/farmers, could possibly use some farm sheds and offer the owners free broadband, theres a few on the hills around the place so it is do-able, its just getting the permission and hoping no-one decides to pull the plug later down the track.

If you can get the permission, funding and skill to set it up, a well set up point to point 5ghz wireless chain is going to be your best bet. In fact if you can get the local community onboard you might be able to establish which places are the best to get coverage to the most people with the minimum number of hops.

If RBI cabinets can do VDSL2 then that'd probably be your cheapest uplink method, otherwise even ADSL2+ (or multiple load balanced if many users).

Wireless RBI uses an external a antenna. Pricing was also regulated by the Commerce Commission so you need to complain to them about pricing.

At the end of the day you can forget about xDSL - your solution is RBI wireless or coming up with your own wireless solution. Conklins are horrible and some won't be replaced because there simply is no way of delivering a better product hence them being replaced by a regulated wireless offering.
