This appears to be quite widespread and may not just be affecting Telecom, but I have multiple Telecom customers without xDSL service this morning including my own VDSL. Nothing on the Telecom site at this time but I'll keep digging.

Edited to expand area.

Edit: Moved to broadband forum. Appears it may not just affect Telecom

There has been a pretty major outage from the looks of it... It's currently being investigated.

Sounds like a key piece of Chorus equipment has failed on the Copper network, and may be impacting more than just Telecom.

Assuming it's a fault outside of the Telecom network, (which it sounds like) what else do you think they could tell you?

Cheers - N

There was a cable cut according to the Telecom Network Status.  Surely the country's broadband infrastructure is not reliant on a single cable!?!?

Our Telecom ADSL & Snap VDSL in Auckland CBD seem to be going fine, my home Bigpipe connection in Onehunga is up too.

[Disclaimer - I don't know the current specifics of the "cable cut" yet]

No, the country's BB infrastructure isn't reliant on a single cable, but there are many situations where a single 'cut' or network element failure could result in degradation or interruption of service for some users.

Telecoms own core network for example has a high amount of redundancy in it for example, but the core network is built to handle all of our traffic and get it up and down the country. It's neither dedicated to best efforts BB traffic, nor does the core extend to certain BB network elements. Some of those are not in Telecoms control (Chorus, other LFCs) and some have limited redundancy.

Cheers - N

Remember the 2 cable cuts that happened concurrently on both sides of the North Island? Couldn't route around them and took out half the country, even phones couldn't get through to Auckland and only the 3rd cable run by FX to the WIX exchange kept the capital connected.

Time to find a new industry!
