Long story cut short - we've got a customer too close to a cabinet causing their ADSL to drop, Chorus have been around and not found a fault and have blamed the equipment (a high-end Cisco router).

My understanding is if a customer is too close to a cabinet this can actually have negative effects on the line stability? Am I correct in thinking this?

Would a change to VDSL improve stability? The cable length from the cabinet is just 25m.

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

We have seen this a lot as well. We have found some modems are better than others.

The only answer so far has been to use big extension leads, or find a better CPE.

Chorus have been unwilling to change profiles to introduce a lower powered option.

Yep chances are that being that close to to the cabinet there will be too much power on the line which will be causing the modem to drop, So the tech is half right in saying "It's the Modem".
A temp fix would be to chuck a telephone extension cable between the wall and the modem to try drop that signal level. We have had techs who have added a loop of cable into a customers house just to fix this.

Being that close I would defiantly be switching to VDSL for the speed alone!

Add our house to the list. Was getting constant disconnection using ADSL on an Asus router. Switch to VDSL and got rock solid connection and awesome sync rates.

Hehe, sure. They won't complain about the 0Mbps sync rate will they?
I do travel as fair as Silverdale though, so no problem checking things out - but sounds like VDSL would be go though :)
