If Orcon is your ISP then your undoubtedly familiar with the Orcon Usage Meter that uses your IP to give you your usage stats without having to login. Well a couple of months ago I felt the need for something more simple (greedy, I know) so adapted the Orcon code into the form of a Vista Gadget.

Considering I had to borrow their code and the gadget connects to their server, does anybody know if it is legal to distribute the gadget or am I bound to keep it to myself? I'm sure theres other users out there who would like to have the gadget.

Any help with this much appreciated

This is an interesting question and probably we will only find out if you go to the source directly and ask.

Regarding the gadget, how did you do it? Do they use a javascript code to create their meter, or a XML output? This sounds interesting if it would work with other providers...

I am with Actrix but that would be so handy having one of those usage meters on my sidebar Laughing

It was pretty simple really, just d/l their js script and source code and played around with it until I figured out what was going on haha. Only took a couple of hours to a) learn how to code gadgets and b) figure out how to put the usage meter into a gadget. The gadget was designed and tested on my laptop and I havn't tested it on anyone elses machine, if you would like to test it for me please PM.

The only thing is that it will only work with orcon because it uses orcon's server to check your fixed ip against their database to find out your usage. If you aren't with orcon, an app called Netlimiter does pretty much the same job (plus the ability to limit up and down traffic to an application...)

Is there any way to upload files to the forum? The gadget file "*.gadget" is just a renamed zip file that Sidebar is associated to.

Usage meter
As you can see, I'm slightly over my usage for this month...

I remember shortly before I left Orcon, they turned off the service on their website. I emailed them and the response was that the meter would probably never come back so its nice to hear it has.

I would get in contact with Orcon. They will probably want to have it downloadable off of their website for their customers. Maybe there could be some cash in there for you. Seeby has a myspace that i think i stumbled upon that he seemed pretty active in - might be able to ask him directly.
