RPi3+ in short:

- 1.4 GHz CPU speed (instead of 1.2 GHz)

- 1 Gbit/s LAN chip (but limited to ~310Mbit/s net due to I/F restrictions)

- 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi (eff. ~100 Mbit/s for the latter)

- BT 4.2

- Network & Mass storage bootable by default

- Improved heat management

- PoE power supply (with add-on board)

- Same price

An improved network speed will be welcome.

Pity there's no SATA, but still a nice little upgrade. Hopefully it doesn't break any apps like the original Pi 3 did.

Older model PI's already made great media players (with KODI/OSMC) - This newer model even better.

I see there has been an Android port available for a while (hadn't noticed that).

It isn't the full 1GHz Ethernet though.

The network still shares the bus with the the USB2.0.

The claim is about 300Mbs on the Ethernet.

Of course when you look at the rest of the RasPi hardware, then it can't sustain that sort of read/write for long anyway.

It still seems like a useful stage upgrade to the Pi.

Pi 3+ is a good name.

I hope for a Pi 4 with USB3.0 and 1GHZ network:)

Waiting for more information on the PoE hat/add-on board. Basically these would be brilliant with PXE and PoE.. as long as the PoE add-on isn't prohibitively priced.

Bad news: the Odroid-N1 recently has been cancelled due to DDR3 RAM obsolescence reasons.

Good news: there will be an Odroid-N2 in Q4 this year with DDR4 RAM instead.

Back to topic:

When replacing a RPi3 with a RPi3+, don't expect a huge performance boost. It's just a "less slower" Pi than before but for some balanced applications it's just fine. The 1GB RAM limit sucks more and should be extended to 2GB at least.

Have been on a Maker Faire today and picked up a RPi 3B+ PoE HAT. Great addition when you have to supply a remote Pi via wired LAN.

The issue doesn't impact my specific use case but this is certainly not the only one for others. The RPi 3 has never been a serious use case for USB- and network demanding tasks but the issue even separates it even more from the widely available control applications left. It's becoming more and more an overpriced marketing gimmick and I'll stay away from now on. :-(

Makes me feel better that I instead just stuck with cheap aliexpress power over ethernet adapters, and have had no problems with them for pi use, or camera use.

Yes, I agree and use them by default for PoE (the 1Gb/s versions as well). This time I needed a compact solution build-in to the original supported case (yes it fits into).
