Hi all. Looking for a new monitor that will work well with my newly rebuilt pc (AMD 5600x and 3070ti). Looking at under $800. Not a big 'twitch' gamer and tend to enjoy the Civ 6, strategy type games, although I will do a Far Cry, Witcher 3, Forza type game every now and then. Something that's more of an allrounder. The larger the better. Any recommendations?

You'll want 1440p for Civ based games.

The gsync will provide smooth feel when FPS gets a bit low.

This has been my daily driver for the past year. Highly recommended.

Definitely one on my list. Does g-sync matter that much now that nvidia works well with amd adaptive sync? Just wondering if I could get a larger monitor with adaptive sync for a similar quality and price?

It's one of the top 1440p monitors on the market so you'll struggle to do better for under $800.

A lot of people like the Xiaomi ultra wide but then you're not using an IPS panel so don't get the same colour accuracy. It depends what matters to you.

I have no regrets buying the LG, I expect to use it for 5-10 years.

I am one of those people with the Xiaomi Ultra Wide (Here) as my main monitor. Colour accuracy is actually pretty good as I've got 2x Dell Professional monitors which are calibrated also. I do recommend especially for the price as I seriously can't tell the difference panel wise between this monitor and my IPS panels.

IIRC it is a Samsung panel so quality wise is pretty good.

Different horse for a different course (21:9 VA vs 16:9 IPS)

I think most people would be very happy with either, it depends if you want ultra wide or 16:9. The picture quality of my LG is noticeably better than the Dell Ultrasharps I have on either side.

Edit: See if you can test drive both in store, if they are available where you are.

I'd give another general +1 to looking at ultrawide monitors in general. After getting my LG 34" WQHD, I have found it extremely hard to go back to either twin monitors or a single small boxy monitor. The immersion is truly next level.

The only exception would be a much bigger monitor obviously, something like a 48CX/C1, but that's a whole other price bracket!

I find this -

https://www.computerlounge.co.nz/shop/peripherals/monitors/gaming-monitors/gigabyte-g34wqc-34-ultrawide-144hz-1ms-curved-gaming-monitor

rather good.

Bit expensive but has occasionally been down to $799. $150 more than the Xiaomi and maybe not worth the difference, but thought I'd mention it.

Looking at the widescreen options, I am rather tempted by the larger screen real estate. Would be a good second tv of sort as well in my small media room/spare room. Decisions decisions.....hahahaha. Will continue looking and see if PB have any grand opening specials coming up.

Go 34" ultrawide 144p you wont regret it.  I picked up a near new one of these https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MONLGL73480/LG-34WN80C-B-34-Curved-WQHD-Ultrawide-Monitor-USB

second hand a few months ago for $800 from memory. Beautiful picture but in retrospect a "gaming" high refresh rate one would probably have been a better call.  I really wanted an IPS panel because of concerns around black smearing on VA panels, but I never actually took a look at the VA options (the AOC and Gigabyte).  The 60Hz LG is fine for casual gaming and slow paced games (eg isometric RPGs like Wasteland) and excellent for games like civ, but the slow response time is noticeable in FPSs, driving games etc.  You really get benefit from the extra screen real-estate in games like Civ and Wasteland.

Its the first monitor I've owned where I now don't use applications in maximised mode -- a full screen browser or word document is just too overwhelming - but its great to be able to have browser open at the same time, or two browsers side by side.  It feels true multi-tasking for the first time.

PB had a very good deal on the AOC ultrawide on last weekends sale, from memory it was $699.

I'd love to get the LG 34" 144Hz nano IPS ultrawide but at $1700 its hard to justify...

@maoriboy - there are some profiles here also that could be worth trying: https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/hrxkm9/xiaomi_mi_34_curved_color_calibration_results/

I'm personally using the one in the OP on that Reddit post and have found it to be almost spot-on but as people on that subreddit state, there are differences too.
