Thought I would offer my take on the side by side question.  I have 2 x 24" Dell 24" monitors, they are just over FHD at 1920 x 1200.  I find having 2 separate monitors helps split areas of focus, whilst the resolution is just enough to have space for working productively on one monitor.

I do have a 25" 2560 x 1440 as well (not on my WFH setup), and ideally I would move to having 2 x 1440p monitors side by side, maybe at 27" as this would give the best combination of resolution, physical size, and pixel size.

Personally I don't see the advantage in 4K monitors if they are run at more than 100% scale, as it means you are not using the 4K resolution.

The other thing I am interested in is, what do people who use a single monitor, especially ultrawides and large 4k's use for window management?

I went from 2x 24" 1080P screens to the 27" 4K I have now and find that generally better.

The advantage of 4K even at >100% scaling is you get lots of UI elements that aren't tiny, but really good detail in them. It's not the same as just having a monitor with a lower resolution.

On Mac I use Better Touch Tool for window management (among other things). On Windows, I used to use DisplayFusion, but found the built in snapping in Win 10/11 to be fine.

I got a new LG 29WP60G-B 29" UltraWide for work and am loving it. I have a Targus DOCK190 which helps a lot with cable management, and I've also noticed the CPU utilization on my MAC dropped a lot after using the Docking station.

I've got 2 monitors on arms, a 24" samsing @ 1080p and a 27" 1440p 165Hz gaming monitor.  both connected to a HP G5 dock so that my partner and I can swap out easily.  Looking to replace the 24" with another 27" 1440p as its amazing for AutoCAD & design reviews etc... as well as the gaming ahem.  Would find it much harder without the monitors so much so that we had to purchase another 24" for the kitchen table for the person relegated from the office...

I don't know when you'll be in the office but we wont be back until next year by the sounds of it (hot desking org in the viaduct area with limited desk space per person and not enough desks for everyone either!) so there still time to maximise your productivity with a monitor!

It's even better now with the native Windows 11 snapping options, and Fancy Zones in Powertoys is awesome for custom layouts.

My work laptop is a Macbook Pro, and I seem to be spending a lot of time on it lately. Because working from home it now generally stays connected to my 24" Dell screen and peripherals via an AV adapter (mouse is a MX Master 2 using bluetooth).

Would getting a Mac Mini and updating my keyboard with a bluetooth model allow me to transparently share the screen/keyboard/mouse etc?

90% of my personal time is browsing or usual application use ... so don't need a gamers setup (just plenty of RAM and reasonable disk space)

We recently moved house from Khandallah to Ngaio.  I have a much better space here for my office and also decided to declutter a bit.  Finished it last night and it feels pretty nice!  Mounted the PC under my desk this time, and used one of those spine cable management things which has heaps of slack to use the desk sitting or standing without any cable issues.  I also had ethernet cabled to all my rooms and it makes a big difference.

Nice one @gehenna

What model is the motorised standing desk and that transformer/bendy silver colour cable management solution?

I see you have a similar office layout like mine with a U shape office and the window. Do you get a lot of direct sun through that window that will keep the back of monitor and desk warm? I am planning to get 2 x L shape motorised desks if I can find the right length for my office where the horizonal axis of both L shape desks will join together and not leave a lot of space wasted on side of walls.

Do whatever you want to do man.

@billgates It's a Europlan 1800mm, not sure of much details other than that.  I had ordered a different one a few weeks before COVID hit us in 2020.  When things ramped up at the border and lockdown was on its way they gave me something from the shop floor instead since the other one was coming down from Auckland and I needed it urgently for WFH (I work in COVID).  The underneath cable tray is just from Warehouse Stationery or similar.  There's plenty of options out there.  The spine is also pretty generic, got it from PB but there's heaps out there.  The sun is ok in that room most of the day given the angle.  Possibly that will be different in winter if the sun crosses the sky a bit lower.  We'll see.  I don't have blinds or curtains in a few rooms of the house yet but will do that in the next few weeks.

Some sheer curtains might do the trick. Really like the way you've got the PC case hanging there. Is it a pain to remove for cleaning? And like that cable tray too. Might get that for my partners standing desk.

The mount is slightly too thin for my case so I had to go to Mitre10 and get a bungee cable to secure it.  It's actually fine though, i mounted it in such a way as it's protected on the outside by the leg of the desk.  So even if the bungee failed for whatever reason it would just lean slightly against the leg.  I'll sort it later with a new case (I've never liked the NZXT one) or a mount of the right size.

I do like it in that position though.  I have a USB fingerprint reader plugged into the top USB port on the case.  So now I just sit down, touch that, and I'm logged in.  It was annoying leaning over to do that when the PC used to be on top of the drawer

@gehenna is that a portaloo on the other side of the fence?

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I'll be the pain and ask if you know the actual name or product link for the cable tray?

I got a sit stand desk from the warehouse and haven't set up my desktop yet due to lack of cable management options and I've been really struggling to find anything decent. Looking at an IKEA signum from idiya but they aren't in stock at the moment.

My setup is somewhat similar.

Desk I just made from pallet wood, about 1420mm wide IIRC.   My kids try to take it over at times, esp the 2yo.

I didn't go too expensive on the ultrawide, it was around $1000 on special.  Wasn't sure if I'd like it over 3x 23/24 monitors.  But I prefer the ultrawide now.   So I want to upgrade to a Samsung one with a much large radius, R1000 (IIRC).   this one the edges are pretty far away from your eyes.   its the ASUS ROG XG49VQ.

My work laptop is hooked up to 3x 24" monitors.   So I'll move this ultrawide to that after I upgrade this.  My 3x 24"s are too heavy for the monitor arm thing I have and they need propping up, kinda annoying.
