How can you tell if your PC has the patch or not?

If you have automatic updates turned on, you should have it. One way is just to download it for your computer and try to install it. Here is the link

As above

It will spread through the normal manner - email etc but if you don't have the patch for "Emerald blue" then it will use that vunerability as well

I imagine by now most good AV signatures have been updated

Well, I'm running XP so I guess I'm kinda screwed then...no patch for me I guess.

You're either winding people up by saying that on a technology community or you're actually serious. If you're serious then please send me that PC so I can sledgehammer it.

No, I'm serious. Owing to having children I can't afford to upgrade the OS, and it will be staying like that for a while, unfortunately. And it's my main desktop machine so it won't be going anywhere for some time.

Microsoft have issued a patch for unsupported XP machines.

"This is an important issue though not sure it is in the right place."

I suppose the moderator will move it.

@Ford I've never seen a moderator create a new topic for an off topic reply. I agree it is an important issue and you should post that specifically in a new topic for discussion. Completely agree it is bad and happy to expand on that in a new topic you create on that issue.

You would be best to do full Windows Updates anyway as there were other vunerabilities that were patched that could be used in the future

I just tried the link again and it works fine. It also worked several times earlier today. It takes you to a page where you can choose a patch for your specific OS version. You can choose to patch only the vulnerability, or do a roll-up for the month.

Don't think so. Separate ~600MB rollup packs for 10

But catalogue might be playing nice again

gzt: What is the initial vector? Word document or executable?

As I understand it, an executable file with fake "double" *.zip.exe extension and embedded icon copy of windows zip file icon.

Several levels of dumbness needed, firstly to leave MS's inexplicable default setting of "hide extension of known file types" toggled on, then with it on, the file attachment would be seen as *xyz.zip" when the real extension is hidden- but unlike a real zip file, an apparent *.zip extension is shown.  Then there should be a default warning about opening / running the file before it's executed (IIRC from Win 7 on??).

But I think on a vulnerable network/unpatched network, all it would have taken is for one user to stuff up, and you're in big trouble.

Best info (including initial vector info) is at the link below:

Appears to be emails or PDF's with a link that downloads via an hta file.

And if you want to go back 1 version, then you need to have accessible your full and all incrementals since.

Reverse Incrementals is where it's at.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of those before. Looks Veeam specific. It is a better system for what they're trying to achieve.

For most people standard incremental is fine. If your latest version is encrypted you just go back a version. That uses the chain to build that version of the file. An occasional differential or full backup is a good idea.
