After some mucking around I had to "refresh PC" rather than retain software I had with Win 7. I made a couple images at the Win 8 stage then proceeded with updating all Win 8 drivers following with the 8.1 upgrade.
Everything went smoothly and I decided to do another image backup with Macrium before reinstalling all my software. This is when Macrium started to detect errors giving me the following message:
Error reading MFT - Error code = 2. Please run 'chkdsk C: /f
I did this and watch chkdsk run in pre-OS. Retried Macrium and same thing. Tried once more to no avail.
The SSD is a OCZ Vertex 4, I ran the OCZ tool box which really didn't tell me much except for 6 errors in the SMART info.
I did some research around the VSS but didn't get anywhere with this.
I'm considering do a full fresh reinstallation (why not?) but don't think this will address the underlying MFT issues (or will it). Strange that the updates under Win 7 and Win 8 worked fine.
I do remember that i had to reset the PC during the win 8.1 upgrade as it hadn't moved past the "Almost Ready message" in an hour. This may have caused the MFT corruption as it occured mid install?
Looking for some help to work out what I can and can't do. If worst comes to worst I will have to replace the SSD or try and get it replaced under warranty.
