I've banished our Brother laser printer to my wife's office because the noise irritated me.

It took a long while to go from active fan noise after printing to silent box again!

The printer was about 10 years old and produces perfectly adequate black and white.

I'm thinking of adding a more modern colour printer with Airprint etc. and large tanks. Epson and Canon have options.

Does anyone have any particular recommendations?

The Epson Ecotank printers. I’ve got one, had it for almost 4 years and have never had to refill it from the ink that came in the box. Prints really nice photos and my partner uses ours for her art also.

We’ve printed heaps…

Purchased a Canon G6040 megatank model for home use. Only had it 6 months, but happy with it. The app is better and more reliable than the Brother one for the previous machine. The one pinch point is, the printer is on a shelf and the printer only works if the control panel is tilted out on the front making the display difficult to read (have to stand on tiptoe).

So good not having to constantly replace ink cartridges.

Have a look at the printer settings...  if LAN connected it will likely have a web interface and you can google for the default password.

See if you can change the setting to have it go back to sleep faster?

I gave up on inkjet printers years ago as they seemed to last 2-3 years, need cleaning, and go through a lot of ink. Maybe they've gotten better. I use a Brother color laser which works well. The fan does stay on for a few minutes after you turn it on or print, after that it's silent until used again, but given I only turn it on about twice a month that's not really a problem. You could just put your laser in another room if it's a network model, like mine is.

Which brother?  Wife has asked me to look for a colour laser.  Was currently looking at HP LaserJet Pro M454 series M454dw   Ideally I want the ability to use wireless since we'll probably put it in a cupboard mostly and hard to het network cable there.  Airprint is also useful and automatic duplex.

The  EcoTank ET-4750  is on my shopping list as it has a touch screen, a bit expensive though.  Have you had any issues with the printhead blocking and needing a deep clean??

Have looked at lasers but  the running cost are fairly high  if you have to replace all the toner carts at once.

Hi there....I have been running brother MFC-9340CDW for the last 4+ years and could not be happier with it. currently wired LAN for all devices in house, but could be WIFI if that suited. Able to print direct from mobile devices too. It is duplex and I have just moved to 3rd party toners with no issues at all which saves a few pennies.

As for the fan noise, yes the fan runs for a bit following a print job but not for that long, although I should put a timer on this....

edit: superseded by this model I believe https://www.brother.co.nz/printers/colour-laser-printers/mfcl3770cdw

Old one now, model will be gone. MFC-91 40CDN. The only thing I wish it had was double sided scanning, which the new ones have. It's about 6 years old, apparently something inside needs to be replaced, but it's not much more expensive to just buy a new one. They're well priced.

Yeah not sure I really care about scanning (or fax)  Have got quite used to using my phone for it (scannable), it also adds to the overall height,

It does need to run a clean every now and then - when I leave it for a few months without printing I do notice things get clogged but nothing that a quick 5min clean cycle can't fix.

How often do you print? How many pages? What are your requirements?

I have a perfectly adequate Canon Inkjet printer/scanner/copier, but I am lucky if I print more than a couple of pages a week.

Printing is crisp and precise, it's silent when it's turned off and also when it's on but not printing, just as you'd expect. Ink is cheap and it doesn't seem to churn through that much of it. Images print well and text is nice and clear. I don't think I'd use it as a main office printer for more than a couple of pages here and there though - it's pretty slow.

printing something every 7 days goes a long way preventing clogs... it'll probably use less ink than printhead clean cycles over a year.

Changed to an Epson Eco-print myself but if buying again, get one that does double-sided printing.
