Your last statement does beg the question though; How does opting in for "Developer Preview" stop that phone causing problems on the Telco network?

I understand that phones are just a computer with a phone attached. Why don't Telco's control when tablets with sim cards get their updates?

I'm a Windows phone user and generally I like the experience... [you all can hear what's coming, right?] ... but ... I'm kind of getting tired of apps being only available on Android and iOS and it seems this is getting worse.

The reason I say this is getting worse is I think a lot of apps are getting to the point where they now offer 'real' functionality. I don't need an app to make fart noises but Zoomy would be nice, I'm thinking of getting a Pebble Steel watch but Windows Phone isn't supported.

Once upon a time I would have said I'm not about the apps but the apps appear to be maturing and delivering more actual useful stuff, and Windows Phone seems to be missing out.

I'm really not bashing Windows Phone, I think it has a lot to offer.

What do you all think?

I hope that the APP gap can be bridged with Normandy, as I really like the simplicity of the windows phone(as does my elderly dad who has a 620)and would love so see the winphone ecosystem be more than a bit player.

I have just recently bought myself a cheapo 520 and have been using it more than my Zopo C2 Android phone, sure the Lumia has it's shortcomings... but for $199... one can't complain!

Apps seems to be pretty scarce on some of my Microsoft mobile devices, plus they can only sync with one Exchange account at a time, so I have to have two ;-)

You can easily figure out people who won't try WP by looking at their opposite (WP early adopters)

1. Minimalist aesthetic lovers. They live in houses that looks like they're permanently staged and probably work in design

2. Contrarians who don't want to do what everyone else is doing. Vegan, ride a fixie bike to work, play Aussie Rules on the weekend

3. Old-school MS techies. Perhaps they might want to get into mobile apps one day and they're familiar with Visual Studio, so they think this would be the easiest path into it

4. "Glitchy" corporate drones. They have a choice of company phone and go for WP because it's different. There's zero risk because if they don't like it, they can swap it for something else. Often lower level drones only get Android or WP to choose from, with Apple reserved for senior mgt. In my experience such policies have resulted in about 15% share for WP

5. I know people who use 3 apps tops. They could use just about anything that makes calls, sends texts, syncs email and has a mobile browser. Not exactly a reason to go for WP, but not a barrier either

Of all the small, yet personally significant changes, the backgrounds on the start screen in 8.1 have me genuinely excited. This right here is the kind of meaningful customisation Windows Phone has previously been lacking - My Facebook friends' profile pictures on the People live tile & so on really are not a substitute for setting my own wallpaper. This is looking very good.

Now, just give me a file browser, a dock, & FLAC support, & I may be on board this year.. ;)

Right now Samsung product management are reading this, shaking their heads and blaming you for failing to understand their upsell strategy. They paid psychological researchers a fortune to gain the insight that people who spend $20 on apps are unwilling waste this investment by switching platform - even if an upgrade to a new device costs $600. Stop being an annoying outlier and get with the program /s
