I was going to call Telecom about this, but it sounds like you have already tried. I would be interested to hear the response, and reasons.

Is there no (known) way to retrieve or reset the password?

The reason is that you are putting an unauthorised/nonapproved firmware on your device.
What you are doing most likely hasn't been tested or approved so they can't really provide any level of support if things go wrong. The same concepts related to imported/parallel imported phones and Vodafone live! (music store, sky tv etc) apply here.

Basically, you are playing with fire - if it works, great. If it doesn't - you'll probably have to reflash the device or send it in for servicing (possibly at your cost).

Telecom should be renting the phones then, not selling them. I believe that it is my phone, and I pay for a connection to Telecom's network. I do not expect support from Telecom for operating my phone, and if I do require it, then I expect to pay.

All I expect is a connection, and the relevant information on how to connect. I see it as being analogous to my PC, and I don't get told what versions of OS / BIOS I need for that.

I too have flashed my phone. It is now heaps more stable, better reception etc etc all plus's.

There is nothing that is incompatible with the telecom network. Just lost the EVDO password along the way.

I don't think reflashing back to an original rom will help on the password side of things. It is a simple matter for telecom to just reset the password.

What ever the case I have learnt bucket loads with the whole process and will definitely do it again and again. LOL

I agree, the guy I spoke to from the Telecom "advanced" networking support team didn't really know how EVDO authenticated so couldn't help. It may be worth calling them yourself to see if you have any more luck. In any case, while EVDO is nice, not having it just saves me money.

Can you not just write down the password from the device and put it back in? curious to know if that works, My okta is rather valuable to me and the loss of EVDO would be fatal.

Yes, I am sure that is true, but I didn't learn that until it was too late, and consequently have no way of telling you for certain if that works or not.

I just wish my foresight and hindsight were reversed sometimes.

I have just completed an upgrade using this page. The only trap I fell into was trying to do the upgrade at step 10 before flashing with the ALLTEL ROM. You must load the ALLTEL ROM first.

Otherwise, all went well and I now have an Okta Touch running WM6.1 with an operational GPS!

Just a question for those who have completed the ROM upgrade following the instructions in the link above - did you follow step 1 and flash the spint OEM ROM the the touch first?

No, I didn't. But I had never flashed any other ROM prior to that. I had the stock standard Okta Touch as released by Telecom.

I am sure it is mentioned elsewhere, but before you upgrade, you need to find your EVDO password and write it down so you can re-enter it later. The upgrade clears this password.

Surely you own other items that have settings not accessible to users, that are required to be present to operate the device correctly?

You pay for a connection to Telecoms network, but nowhere do you have an agreement with Telecom for them to give you all their network settings. Telecom have always been really clear about the fact that they only connect devices they supply or approve, and that their dealer network and helpdesks and repair agents deal with all handset settings/programming. They do not support firmware not tested/approved by them.

This doesn't suit your particular needs, but it clearly has suited Telecoms for quite some time.

The relevant information on how to connect is very likely considered by Telecom to be their intellectual property. They maintain control over devices and firmware for the same reasons VFX limit what devices you can connect to their VoIP network, and dont freely give out settings - they want the user experience to be as seamless as possible, and the relatively few people (compared to the overall customer base) who want that fine-grained access and/or control are probably simply not part of the target market.

Look at the number of people on these or other forums who have trouble connecting a Linksys device to VFX or a standard unmodified Telecom mobile to their respective networks, and then compare that to the number of people who have trouble connecting various Asterisk boxes to VFX or imported handsets to Vodafones network etc.

Im not saying you are wrong, I am saying that its completely Telecoms choice to not want to divulge information to help customers stray away from the experience Telecom have worked hard to create.

Updated ROMs from TNZ on a much more regular basis would help things a lot though I'm sure!!

Surely browsing the same web page, or recieving the same emails on EVDO uses the same amount of data as on 1X....

Hi i noticed a couple of you have installed the sprint ROM 6.1 Rev A (Almost OEM 6.1 Rev A)

I have done the same everything is working fine. Email/Internet/GPS etc

There is one problem i am having though. hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

When ever an application tries to access a connection I get 2 pop up messeges that seem to be related to the Sprint carrier.

1st message

DATA PROVISIONING

Preparing vision services please wait.

then it will eventually time out and then report..

DATA PROVISIONING FAILURE

Error Code: 1012
Could not prepare vision services, please try again later.
If the problem persists please contact Sprint.

Any Ideas?

Sprint has something they call OTA or something to that effect. If you look in your program folder on your device you will find it easy enought. Just delete that folder. Then you wont get the error message. There are probably some registry settings that you could remove to. I have never bothered to track them down.

Hi,

I have done the update (with no problems) to "Almost OEM revision" and phone works fine (GPS etc) apart from Internet. I do not even have 1X data connection...

What do I need to do to get 1X data connection?

To get 1x going.

Go to settings-connections-conetions, then add a new modem connection

Call it what ever you want, using the cellular line.

use '#777' as the number to be dialed.

user name = 'mobile@jamamobile'
password = telecom

finish. select it as the default conection and 1x is up and running.

To get EVDO going you will next to have extracted you evdo password before upgarding. Go to www.ppcgeeks.com and do a search for okta and you should find a thread on it.
