I have Bluetooth and USB for modem connection set up on the desktop so just a double click to connect via those.

However, you've now sold me on Joikuspot so I have bought the paid edition.

Was approx NZD17 while on special in the Joikuspot store but just NZD4.99 in the Ovi store - so thanks Nokia.

Yes -> 14.002. Mainly to improve sync to Nokia's Mail for Exchange, updates Ovi Store application and adds some to Ovi Maps (mostly stuff like public transport routes, etc not available here yet). I don't use MforE and I think my Ovi store app had already updated to the same release from a just prior visit to the store so I did not notice anything really. I actually didn't notice much change after the previous PR1.1 update either as things seemed to be working pretty smoothly for me anyway (can't even remember what that update added/fixed now except QuickOffice got updated to premium edition so can now edit MSOffice things in it).

I would think you definitely have something wrong or a else a heavy power user going such as wireless data. Wireless via Joikuspot I found is power hungry but can't compare that to the alternative of using phone as a modem USB tethered to PC as phone is then on charge of course. For heavy wireless demand I usually have the N8 on charge so have never seen how quickly the battery runs right down but the little I have seen it would be pretty quick and the phone gets quite toasty - I have wondered if Joikuspot pushes the phone to high Tx power all the time during Tx in order to maximise range to the PC(s) using it??. But on my E52 using it as a modem via bluetooth I know that knocks the battery hard too with heavy OTA to outside world data use so tend to tether it via USB instead so charges while Tx/Rx, so maybe not a great deal in it.

Things like music, reading ebooks, email (manual connections not periodic or push), etc on the N8 doesn't move the battery meter bars even after many hours. Battery life during navigation seems about the same as my E52 but I have to say I have not used the N8 much for that due to the silliness of Nokia deciding not to send nav voice annunciations from the N8 via bluetooth to headset (whereas the E52 does).

For voice calls I don't do enough in a day (I charge my phones end or start of every day regardless) to tell what its telephony power demand is but suspect is much the same as my E52 and other phones of similar battery capacity.

Meant to comment that if you have multiple devices connected through the phone to the outside world via Joikuspot hotspot then I would expect power demand is going to be quite high as the phone will be managing multiple Tx/Rx links to all the devices.

Not running Joiku in this instance. It runs very hot, I turn it off and back on to ensure nothing is running and it happily goes flat in 3.5 hours with nothing running. I'm trying to hard reset it, but I must not have the dexterity required to action this.

Ah, tip for hard resetting, when you press down-volume/camera/menu/power together, release the power first after (I was releasing menu first and that cancelled the reset)

That appears to have done the trick. Morning of downloading updates via WiFi and such and still at full battery.

Or you can dial * # 7370 #from the dialler screen (this does a factory reset on any Symbian device and all new S40 devices). The power-on key combination is only required if you some how can't access the dialler.

After a hard multikey reset on the N8 you may find that you have lost Ovi Store and any Qt developed app's.

Haven't done a hard reset myself so am just taking that from other's experiences which may or may not be reliable - but I think I saw somewhere Nokia acknowledging those issues. But might be worth checking if these are important to you.

That was a common conclusion if forums last year. I first installed the offered phone update, then OVI store and was successful. After that I installed Maps (NZ maps only) and connected to Exchange to pull down mail, calendar and contacts. I then connected to OVI and it confirmed that I had all the updates available to me, so that we reassuring.

What was a little inconsistent was that Angry Birds was still there (with my completed level user data in tact). There is not MicroSD installed so it didn't come from there.

Thanks, I had read conflicting accounts of what the dialler reset actually did, i.e. user data wipe only or factory reset, but that clears it up should I have to hard reset again.

ps. do you know if the N8 supports the ActiveSync Remote Wipe feature?

The missing apps issue was to do with Ovi Store and Ovi Maps and the fact that they were not integrated into the firmware. current versions of the firmware have the base versions integrated and therefore will not have any issues with any kind of reset.

Qt apps of course will be wiped but this should happen to all applications.

Some apps may remain if installed on your memoryn card or mass memory, but any auto startup and background processes that may be causing battery or performance issues will have these priviledges revoked as the area that these system settings reside in is reset.

Re: remote wiping ... Symbian supports around 10 times as many Active Sync security features as the other OSs that use ActiveSync. I'm not positive on remote wipe (feelings lean towards yes) but settings such as remote lock, forced lock codes and lock code resets, etc are supported. Brent has more experience with training on MfE and should be able to answer the remote wipe question.

But is Qt support, being the runtime modules or whatever they may be called, now reinstalled after a hard reset with the post PR1.0 firmware updates? Up until some stage of the N8's life they were not but I don't know when.

I am referring to those files that would otherwise be installed by Qt 4.7.2 S^3.sis, QtMobility 1.1.1 S^3.sis and QTWebkit 4.7.2 S^3.sis (am just using the installation versions in the current beta SDK as examples, without checking I think the released versions are actually 4.6.2)

These were allways integrated into the firmware. I'm not sure exactly which versions were in PR1.0, but the libraries were in there and could be updated to the latest release after hard reset.
