Wade: I am struggling to understand why Telecom have locked off 4G and would welcome an explanation, I keep coming back to the thought that it is purely anti competitive behavior? I like many I presume would take my phone and buy a local sim when travelling overseas and if a 4G network was available I would want to have the choice to be able to use it.

Whilst the WP8 update policy in general seems to be far better than Android, it would seem that any carrier customization convolutes the process. The henry ford/steve jobs approach generally seems to be far better for the consumer

I didn't want to twiddle with roms on my 920 but it looks like the best option moving forward is going to be to throw a generic non carrier branded rom on there

My main reason is I hate carrier customized phones especially when it blocks features.
I bought my phone outright why does it need to be locked down, I go overseas every year or two and just use local sim cards and want to use it to its full potential for data if its an option.

reasons I can see for the blocking of 4g would be battery life (face it most people won't know how to set it to 3g/2g only) and it not being available here in nz at the time of the phones release.
I am sure there are many reasons.

I do believe in the Google Nexus and Apple way that carriers should not be in control of updates and the owner of the handset makes the choice of customizations.

It sound like a Nokia Nexus from Telecom NZ would have the same constraints

BTW I'm a user of a Nokia Lumia 920 just like you who paid $999 of my own personal hard earned dollars to have a 4G disabled phone and no answer from manufacturer or carrier

It will be a great day when Telco's determine customization is of less benefit to the consumer than timely updates (cue the non branded Nexus4 sold through 2D doesn't seem to cause any issues discussion :P). I accept that there was a fast dormancy issue with SGS3's on telecom but that is the only valid argument I have ever heard that's supports a need for carrier customization

Because it's not a complete network yet, the same as Vodafone's (who covers more water than land).

Telecom are in the process of user testing, before they release it to the general public, much the same with Fibre at the moment.

Vodafone only released 4G before Telecom because they were behind the came, and managed to get hold of the TelstraClear spectrum (which still isn't finalised through regulations).

That still doesn't quantify why my phone should be semi disabled. Let me have the ability to use 4G regardless of available networks

A good question would be can people that town overseas be able to have it enabled, if not why when the country that most people travel to from NZ has 4G that this mobile supports.

The argument that Telecom has not got 4g is valid and it does save battery by having it disabled which I am sure the average person would have not clue on where to do this and just blame the phone and telecom for the bad battery life.

Other reasons could be saving roaming customers the chance of Bill shock as it can get through data rather quickly.

Regardless there should be the option to have it enabled now if you wanted to use it and they want you to keep their branding.

I received a phone call back from Harvey Norman that the repairers said that they've tested my phone and experienced no problems but reloaded the software again; I'm going to make damn sure that if I do have a freeze or any problems I record a video of these freezes because IMHO is a load of crap that they weren't able to reproduce it unless all they did was turn on the phone and pressed a couple of icons. I'm tempted to look at an HTC 8S because maybe I'll have better luck with that.

My friend brought a mobile phone from Harvey Norman last year. It never worked properly, it would over heat turn itself off and lag about. It as sent away three times and every time the response was the same from them until the last time when I went in with her and refused to allow them to send it away again and demanded a refund or replacement unit. They gave the money back immediately because she didn't want the same handset or to have to deal with them again if there was a problem in the future. Don't let them stuff you around over and over again just because they reckon they can't replicate the fault.

According to Harvey Norman they sent it away to Nokia's repair people - I'm tempted to find out who they actually used and deal with them myself because in all due respects it seems that Nokia is just dumping products onto the NZ market with little or no consideration as to actually following it up with some real product support. Oh well, I'm going to turn it on when I'm at the store and see if it freezes on first boot up like it did the first time I loaded up the phone; if it does I'll be at the store ready to return it once again to get repaired.

Just received it back, looked at the report and Telelogistics claimed that they could find no hardware fault - took it home, turn it on and it crashed three times in a space of a couple of hours. Rang the company up, left a message and hopefully they'll get back to me tomorrow. In all seriousness, did they actually TEST the phone?
