I am surprised to hear that but I do think if there was one handset to change my mind, it'd be the One. HTC are the only company IMO that rival Nokia on hardware design.

I have been using a Lumia 920 and this was purely to support Nokia but as MF pointed out MS isn't the best ecosystem to deal with right now. I love this phone however I am just fed up with windows and at a point of moving to HTC One or S4 most probably HTC One.

I have no real or major issues with Windows Phone as such. It's only getting better with every major update that is released. The social integration is really good over any other competing mobile OS's.

Do whatever you want to do man.

The phone needs a reflash to bring it back to life. Too late for doing it yourself on Navifirm tho so you'll have to send it in.

Nope. They stuffed up on Messaging. Messaging today supports SMS, Messenger and Facebook. It should be a plugin structure to allow others to add their services as well. This way it could have Skype, Twitter DMs, WhatsApp, Viber, EchoEcho, etc, etc all in one single place.

Messenger is another area that Microsoft made a fool of themselves. Merging with Skype is good. Killing Messenger on desktop and replacing with Skype is good. Keeping Skype and Messenger separated on Messaging for Windows Phone and Messaging for Windows 8 is bad.

Charging developers to release apps in specific markets instead of having apps spreading quickly is bad.

Microsoft is behind the game, and yet plays like they're number one.

Many of the things I have complained before are actually similar to things I complained in my Microsoft MVP years (2004 - 2011). All those years things went nowhere. And they still go nowhere it seems.

I tried many Android devices and none really "worked" for me. But the HTC One works and it's really different from before. So after using Windows mobile for 11 years, it's time to change.

Updates are worse on Android (excluding Nexus devices that are sold by Google). Saying that right now no one has got it right. Yes Apple releases updates to every iPhone in the world regardless of which carrier they are on same day etc but they also break something with that update. This has happened many times. Our company's exchange server was being taken down by a rogue update from Apple just few months ago. There are many examples on the internet.

In the end it's the carrier that has to take these support calls and it's worse for them when they actually never authorised the update in the first place and are now getting hammered with support calls. What I think is a good solution to this is what Microsoft actually proposed which is a registered enthusiasts program where geeks can get updates on their Windows Phone devices without waiting for carrier approval. This was announced June last year. And like you said above, it's a valid complaint that I also echo.

As for the integration of Twitter DM's, Whatsapp etc. I am no developer so not sure what can be done from Microsoft itself but I am sure Microsoft would need approval or at least a partnership with these services in order to integrate it into the messaging hub etc. iPhone does not even have facebook and twitter deeply integrated into the OS like Windows Phone does.

Then there are things like pinning your favourite contact on the start screen something you cannot do on the iPhone yet it still sells in millions. The next obvious thing I see for the Microsoft ecosystem is to have Skype deeply integrated. They have just started rolling it out in outlook.com. Release an app for Xbox 360 etc.

As for apps availability across different markets is left completely up to the developer. If they are smart, they will publish their app globally (and most do).

There is lot that can be improved in Windows Phone 8 (notification centre, universal search and more) but the way I look at it is that like the iPhone, the underlying base is solid, more level are being added with every update making it even better but I agree with you that the OS should be updated fairly regularly (may be twice a year major updates).

Without a doubt, everyone also knows that iPhone has the market share and demand around the world where Apple dominates the mobile carrier. Microsoft is simply not in that position regarding software updates without carrier approval. If they can ASAP start the update enthusiast program, it will make the geeks happy because general public simply does not care about software updates. I come across so many iOS devices, where the user is still sitting on an old version of the OS, and they have a new update notification sitting under their settings.

I hope HTC sticks WP8 in HTC One sometime this year. It should prove to be very popular indeed.

As far as I'm concerned, having owned the 920 since launch, and having experienced most of the teething issues, it's pretty much flawless now. Perfect stability, excellent battery, and it does everything it was meant to do when purchased. Updates are always welcome, but it's not in dire need of anything since the 1308 ROM. It's also fun and interesting to be in a new and growing ecosystem.

I'd say the worst experience was the need to reflash it after a hard reset failed. It was easy for me to do, but normally one would have to send it away, which would be a pain. I highly doubt this is going to be an issue for current buyers though.

My last Android was just a nightmare of flashing and endless fiddling to try and beat it into something usable, which I never managed. It was basically the same experience as all the WinMobile phones I had before that, just with newer apps and newer hardware. These days I want to use my phone, not fiddle with it. I like the HTC One's Design, especially the Nokia features it has, but I wouldn't consider another Android until they dump it like MS dumped Windows Mobile and rewrite it from scratch.

I am not saying Microsoft has to do it. I am saying the platform has to leave it open and available. Just look at what BlackBerry is doing with its Hub on BlackBerry 10. All incoming messages - emails, SMS, Twitter, Facebook, System update notifications, App update notifications, etc - come through the Hub. You can then filter by app or folder if you want but it's all there.
