nathan: Why don't you just buy a Nokia cover for A$10?

Because I don't want a cover on my phone, and Telecom wouldn't replace my phone for having a creaky back cover.

Hi all. New member here. I've been looking at getting a Nokia 920 through parallel imported. Looks like a HK model. I just wanted to know if there was any risk in terms of missing out on updates. Would like to go through telecom or an official distributor, but I cant justify dropping a cool grand on a phone (well, to be more specific my partner cant!) Nokia said they don't know, as it depends on the variant. As someone who had a Samsung focus, I'm really looking to stay within windows phone, and the red Nokia looks great. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had a Lumia 800 from HK and that received updates fine, just later than others here.

In my experience with unbranded imported phones is that you get all the updates and usually well before any of the local variants for Vodafone or Telecom.

Thanks for the speedy responses. I guess it was just Nokia's scaremongering tactics to get me to go through telecom. Really looking forward to a Windows Phone 8. Especially with some of the impressive apps Nokia has.

what apps? - ANZ, BNZ, Westpac, Trademe, Metservice, supermarkets, petrol stations, Teamviewer - just a few straight off the top of my head.

They don't have any mate.

Windows Phone OS is very poorly supported by vendors et al - as you'll find out. Some of them, if you ask, and I have, say, "Windows Phone apps will be coming soon". Waiting for them is like waiting for the OS updates, or worse :(

So good luck in that regard!, I hope you enjoy the interface, it's the true redeeming feature.

Ha, ha yeah, I'm aware of the lack of apps WP8 has. I bank with ASB, so no worries there. As for TM, I've actually bought more stuff off Ebay. I know for some people its all about apps, but for me, as an ex wp7 user, I really more about the O/S then apps. I love features such as the people hub. I'm also a huge xbox user. The integration with the xbox and my xbox account is enough of a selling point on its own.

Not having an app for everything is not as much of a drama as people make out - just bookmark the mobile site. I'm with Kiwibank and theirs works perfectly well, as does Xero, and Trademe too.

If you don't want to see the browser address bar or other chrome, and want a nice pin-able icon, just download WebApps from the store... it does that.

Just for fun I checked the other named businesses in the post above apart from Teamviewer, and they all look fine to me.

I tend to use the webapps too - most of them work well. I've been testing a Firefox OS device sporadically over the last few weeks and that has even less apps than Windows Phone - Web apps tend to get the job done.

Agree 100%. The MetService mobile site works fine on WP8. Rain Radar is very handy to have while out and about and it works just fine.

It works a treat, many thanks Steve!

Just a thought: Maybe enable the Live Tile update by default, as I went to all the trouble of creating a small tile and positioning it where I wanted it, only to find it wasn't live. Then had to do the same thing all over again once it had created the live tile. I think most users would want this function, unless it's considered bad programming form to do that for some reason?

Ummm are you kidding mate?

As said previously all the banks have mobile sites which pretty much have the same functions as an app. I use the Kiwibank mobile site all the time. There's even a NZ specific app for supermarkets and petrol stations and public toilets!!

I think Apple and Android have brain washed people into the idea of more apps is best since apps make them loads of money. But seriously I use maybe 2 or 3 apps on a daily basis and all the rest of them are free on my Windows Phone. Apart from a few time waster games I've never felt like my Windows Phone lacked any apps I need.
