nathan: curious to know if you think the future is digital downloads of games or not?

Personally I'm looking forward to not having to take my discs to my friends houses when I want to play games at their houses

That may be so, but I'd like to be given the option of going offline when I choose to as per Steam.

And yes, I have a ton of content on Steam... which I rarely update :)

billgates: You cannot sell re-sell games on Steam either and yet PC gamers are happy. Steam has regular sales on games and dlc. Developers and Publishers give Steam the special pricing and content because they know that their games cannot be re-sold again in a used games PC market. Xbox One is heading down the same path. This will get them the exclusive content from developers and publishers and the special pricing for the end user.

But hold on, you've also never been able to sell any downloaded games from Xbox or PS3 yet there has been almost no difference in price and sales are usually pitiful in comparison with Steam.

You do not have to buy PC games from Steam. Even if you buy the Battlefield 3 PC game from DSE or Noel Leeming or another retail outlet, once the key is tied to your Steam account, that's it. No more re-sale for you! The physical media means nothing.

You can be offline on XB1 for up to 24 hours. Sure you go offline on Steam but you don't actually disconnect that PC from the internet. Your XB1 will be sitting connected either via a cable or wireless.

Another good bit about the Xbox One is that once you insert the game disc in your console, it will silently rip the entire game in your HDD. You can then take the disc out and the game will still continue to play. If you have 2 or 3 or more games installed, you can keep switching between them from the point where you left them without ejecting game disc 1 then inserting game disc 2.

Also as long as you are the owner of the physical disc, an exact replica of the retail disc will be made available on the cloud for Xbox One owners. So if the disc is damaged for whatever reason, you would not have to fork out $100 or whatever the disc might cost at that point in time to play the game again on Xbox One. This is also the same case with Steam. PS4, if the disc is damaged, well tough luck and you also need to have the disc inside the tray all the time to play the game.

This is the feature I was looking for and it being missing in the XBOX 360 is the reason why I never bother to switch the unit on. Hopefully there will be a demo/review video at some stage where these features will be examined in detail.

I don't mind the unit checking the internet from time to time - the sky box and the video recorder already do this so I see the Xbox one as just being an enhanced version of one of those. But I do think one should be able to play offline for a long period of time.

The only other key requirement I think is the integration with TV and set-top boxes. So far I have not heard of anything happening in NZ regarding this (Freeview, T-Box, MySky etc.) and I am hoping it will not be another media Center which worked well in the US but not so well in NZ.

A video demo is indeed available. It's not switching between 2 games though. It's switching between Forza Motorsport 5, TV, Music etc but you get the point. Nothing stopping switching between 2 games either. This demo is from May 21st when Xbox One was revealed worldwide.

EA runs Origin which also does BF3 so you are correct. I think you can still add it to Steam though but the key activation will most likely needs to be done via Origin. Either way though, which ever company you use to activate the key, it's tied for good. Microsoft and Sony are just as greedy as Steam.

Think about it logically.

If you are a developer or publisher, would you not supply cheaper content to Steam or Origin knowing that your games cannot be re-sold on those networks vs Xbox or PS where currently a used games market exists. Every customer who wishes to play your game on PC is a paying customer for you. Every used game sold on consoles, is money for the guy selling it and $0 for the developer/publisher. Developers and Publishers do supply cheaper content to Steam for this reason. Once a game is released on Steam, after few months it's available for dirt cheap. Not the case with console gaming.

So what happens if I have no internet for more than 24hrs ? Not being a nitpicker but curious, is the end of taking the console to the family batch during holidays to game on night or rainy days ?

Instead you can go to their house and spend the night watching the progress bar as it downloads a 8-12GB game at 12Mbps. You're right, that IS much better! They will so grateful that night of gaming cost them 1/10th of their monthly data cap :)

As per the official PR, the offline game will stop working. Recommendation is to use your smartphone's hotspot feature if no broadband internet access is available for the console to connect via on your xbox and the activation will validate the game for another 24 hours. They specifically mentioned today that the console uses 'kilobytes' of data for the ping back to the servers to verify whether the disc that you own has been registered on another console or not thus whether or not to de-register the game on your console or not.

24 Hours is ludicrous. I presume they will make it longer than that before they release it based on the furious feedback (3 days would be reasonable), or like W8, they will ignore the feedback, and then add that feature to a dashboard update after they have upset a large number of customers as they are doing with Windows 8.
