I just finished Until Dawn on the PS4. It's kind of.... pointless. It's by no means terrible (especially since it's reasonably short and to the point) but the mystery man was never a mystery to me. The developers also seemingly couldn't decide whether the game was intended to be a horror game or some kind of subversion or satirical take on horror movies. 6/10. You'd feel really sorry for yourself if you paid full retail price.

I enjoyed Until Dawn. Played it a few times to see how differently it ended up. Its a very cabin in the woods thriller. In fact if you've seen Cabin in the Woods it reminds me a lot of that without the supernatural elements.

Their followup Man of Medan is good too.

lagbort: Started Red Dead Redemption 2 again now that it is out on Xbox game pass. I played through originally on an original PS4 but playing it again on the One X with 4K and HDR is a whole different ball game, absolutely gorgeous and still my favourite game of the last few years.

Have you played the OnLine mode?

I've clocked story mode a few times, but now I'm grinding away @ OnLine.

Buggy son-of-a-biaaat*h.

Soooo buggy.

Just started on God of War (PS4).
Stunning looking game, but the difficulty is a bit of a headache. 'Normal' is a bit too easy for me, but next level up 'give me a challenge' is really tough.
I dread to think what 'give me God of War' difficulty would be like (way beyond my abilities at least).

I'm glad I gave The Witcher one last ditch attempt. I'm 60 hours in and just started Act 3. Looking forward to wrapping up this story and starting Blood and Wine. This will definitely tide me over until The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.

I am onto chapter 8 of the FFVII remake. I am not the world's biggest JRPG fan but also appreciate some of their inherently campy humour and the overall "style". Yet unlike a lot of critics and other gamers, I struggle to see how this can be viewed as anything great on the evidence so far.

Again, it's not bad and certainly not a waste of time but taken on its own merits (without having played FF7 and judging it by reference to general notions of what excellence in game story telling etc mean), IMO, I just don't see why people are so impressed. Cloud seems like a thoroughly unlikeable character, the story veers between being serious to extremely campy, the sound mixing/production is terrible with the result that a lot of the character dialogue sound like they were recorded in some kind of underwater chamber, and there are significant graphical issues. I have forgotten how many times my teammates have just become see through characters as Cloud needed to squeeze through tight spaces and the like. The level design throughout the 2nd reactor that Cloud & Co had to destroy would have been embarrassing even in the 1990s to 2000s.

The saving grace is a combat and to relative lack of fluff. 7/10 at best for me so far.

I'll wait for your final analysis, seems you tend to dislike some games up front then get turned around on them when you're deeper into them.  As FF7 ramps up I suspect that may be the case this time too :)

Was going to get the FF7 remake but I just can't trust Square anymore and I might wait until the next part releases before juming into it. I think they've completely lost the feel for how to make an epic rpg, KH3 for example was just dissapointing in the way the game is paced out with collectable side quests holding you back to continue the main story.

Started Xenoblade Chronicles 2 expansion Torna The Golden Country, I had a 3 month break after putting 400 hours into the main game and I'll try to complete the expansion before I play the Xenoblade 1 remaster. Can't wait for the DE to arrive

That trend is partially continuing but I am not convinced the turnaround will be massive. Quite deep into chapter 8 now and Aerith's voiceovers are much better done than, say, Jessie's. And even Cloud seems to have lost that underwater voice effect. Technically the game remains quite weak and there are just way too many implausible/internally inconceivable moments that are too jarring. The game tries to go for something quite grand in terms of the story but there are so much little details that aren't right (e.g. Cloud & Co supposedly have been all over the TV as "terrorists" yet somehow he can just run freely around everywhere in exactly the same look/clothes as he was when he was taking down the Mako plants).

Although I have always loved Naughty Dog games (played through and finished every game in the Uncharted series), for some reason I'd never been able to really get into The Last of Us. It's not that I didn't enjoy it but I ended up always stalling on finishing it. Finally got back into the game entirely afresh and am now around probably 50% of the way through the remaster and it's just spellbinding. It just gets away from the most annoying features of modern games IMO. It's so refreshing to have collectibles that can be very coincidentally found most of the time with a bit of attention, without immersion breaking nonsense of having to traipse gazillion miles away just to chase one because some designer decided the game needed some padding. Checkpoints are actually fairly dispersed and whilst there are difficulty spikes, they spike in a way that's pleasant and not frustration inducing.

A lot of the adult themes are also maturely handled without sounding hamfisted or gratuitous. Having finished God of War recently and being left generally non-plussed by its supposedly wonderful story and writing, I am enjoying TLoU's story and character interactions so much more. Yeah the subject is cliched but Joel and Ellie's journey still has a lot of weight to it.

I'm maybe a 10-15% the way through after only playing for an hour or so last year - I tend to play a lot and then play no games for 3-4 months.

I really loved the Uncharted games but I'm struggling to really enjoy this one. Games that are played in the dark with zombies aren't really my thing.

I will go back and do some more tomorrow but I think I just get annoyed with too much sneaking around.

Persevere with it. The initial couple of hours of TLoU make it come across as a very by the books shooter with some quite standard horror elements but without the panache and set pieces of the other ND titles. The story, characterisation, atmosphere and everything else pick up dramatically later on. I tend to also not like zombie games with lots of sneaking around - what I ended up doing was lowering the difficulty, so that I still needed to be careful and sneak a bit but without having to do it perfectly or risk being owned. The game became much more enjoyable as a result.

I don't think I can be bothered. Spent another half an hour tonight trying to get past the same stupid encounter. The problem with the stealth crap is having to waste too much time redoing encounters if I die after killing the third or fourth zombie. It wastes so much time and I really only have time to play for an hour in a session.

To be honest, I like you tend to play in bursts, often I'll play a LOT for a while then nothing for a long time. Usually, a new game is what prompts me back, or something that prevents what I usually do in my evenings or whatnot, or a holiday.

Everyone raved about this game, and I felt it *was* good, and was very different and the story was fantastic (though I only really felt that at the end), but a couple of years on, I can't recall much if anything about the plot, or gameplay, just that I had a positive experience with it, though far less than the rave reviews others gave it everywhere.

Because my time is limited, I tend to stick to games that score *very* highly, or with franchises, or concepts I generally enjoy (XCOM, Just Cause, AC and other sandbox games).

Whilst I think overall it probably *is* worth persisting with, perhaps move on to something you can enjoy now, and see if the mood strikes you later to play it again.

Life is too short to play games you aren't currently in the mood for.

Yeah. I've got a week off next week with the Eid holiday and then work is enforcing 3 days compulsory leave so will have some more time.
