Hasnt my topic generated such interest lol.

Im fine with the 'arguments'. It helped me make my mind up and i should be getting a PS3 in the next couple of weeks and hopefully it will help others who were in my boat - which may be quite alot of people?

i'm sorry i don't mean to argue but when someone quotes everything i say and then proceeds to disagree based on god knows what, certainly not knowledge, i like to be able to respond. we keep covering a point and just as we put it to rest someone new comes along and starts the same arguments all over again. do us a favour and check google before (and i quote munchkin) spouting your opinion as if it were fact.

matepoon: I'm not talking about time ahead. I'm talking about AAA games available for the system right now. You have reiterated one of my other points that the PS3 game library will catch up in the next 2-3 years.

i was talking about when the game selection would catch up too as you'll find the 360 was a year ahead not a year and a half. i was not reiterating your point. i said 1 & 1/2 years, the game selection won't take as long as 3 years to catch up. the initial release of games on any new console is always slow mainly due to new technology. xboxs technology has been proven much more developer-friendly to begin with than ps3s. developers also take their sweet time to commit to consoles as in the past they have been hung out to dry by a certain console manufacturer. cough SEGA cough. (Sega Saturn, Sega 32x and Sega CD were all dropped by Sega very early and with little warning, much to the dismay of developers).

matepoon: we only have the original xbox to judge Microsoft on so far. And you say the above as if it is fact. In your 'experience' you can predict the future? So what if Microsoft stops manufacturing the 360. Then they'll surely follow it up with the next iteration.

i know we only have the original to fall back on for these figures but how is that my fault? the fact of the matter is sony (with ps1 and ps2) supported both consoles long after the next generation came out and a lot longer than microsoft ever did with xbox. i'm sorry but these are the facts. just because microsoft got into the console market at a later stage doesn't excuse these facts. take them how you like but until microsoft bring out their next console we will have only one way of judging whether they will continue support of the 360 and that is with past experience. as for your last "so what?" remarks i hope for the consumers sake that you're wrong.

if you look back in this thread and other past threads you will find plenty of differences, however i don't mind listing a few for the lazy...

-how about the big one - xbox has (the now defunct) HDDVD, ps3 has bluray.
-xbox supports Divx version 5 and up, ps3 supports Divx version 3 upwards.
-xbox was built to take advantage of WMC aswell as WMP where as PS3 was built for use with the original Sony software with support from 3rd parties.
-ever heard of "Play TV"??
-PS3 has HDMI 1.3
-you can install such OS as linux making that another media outlet.
-munchkin has also mentioned previously about the differences between their audio bit streaming of codecs.

there are plenty more too that i can't remember off the top of my head, but any smart person will check these differences before purchasing one.

i'm pretty sure you'll find that you have to buy the wireless rechargable battery packs separately for the 360 controllers where as the ps3 has it's battery built into it's controller - meaning you don't have to go out and buy the rechargable pack or provide your own AAs. hence not wireless out-of-box.

i take offence to your use of the word "midget" - it is an offensive term to people who are of a smaller proportion and you are no doubt a biggot. I've seen comedians heckled off stage with better taste in humour than you.
believe it or not size and weight matters when it comes to technology as you can no doubt see via every technological institution there is - cellular, pc, console, media players etc. so yes it does matter.
i've also read a few reviews that have shown that believe it of not ergonomics matter to a controller as well as button layout due to the fitigue that can be caused by extensive gaming sessions particularly due to the amount of times you have to switch a finger to a different button as well as the amount of movement needed to switch. trust me Sony and Microsoft spend millions of dollars in research on these things you're just shrugging off.

matepoon: (talking about sixaxis) Fair point. I agree, it is a nice feature. But is it little more than a gimmick? Time will tell I guess. Tell me some of the great games that it supports now.

i can see how some people can pass it off as a gimmick, after all it was rushed in to compete with the Wii. Though i still think innovation like this will only improve gaming in the long term. you can guarantee the next xbox console will have motion sensitivity of some sort.
as for games that take advantage of it, some use it rarely while others use it for the majority of control. but here are a few...

Rainbow 6 Vegas, Lair, Madden, Tony Hawks, Tiger Woods, NBA 2K7, NHL 2K7, Blazing Angels, Virtua Tennis, Resistance, Genji, Fight Night, COD3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Ratchet & Clank, Motor Storm, Ridge Racer, Warhawk, Splinter Cell, Heavenly Sword... and there's quite a few more either out or on the way.

IMHO the PS3 sixaxis controller is not a 'gimmick'. It works as advertised and I can use it in games like Warhawk and Folklore. The more you use a sixaxis controller the more you get used to it. I predict more motion-based peripherals like this for most consoles (meaning that Xbox will have to catch-up eventually).

How is Microsoft going to catch-up with regards to Blu Ray? They have basically already ruled out an add-on and claim the future is in downloadable content. Whilst I don't disagree with their prediction for the future I think that you can't ignore those people without band-width or with measley caps. There will always be a need for physical media.

Talking about add-ons......the one major disadvantage to the Xbox 360 (in my opinion) is all the the add-ons you are required to buy to even come close to the 'equivalent' PS3. Direct comparisons of price between the two are basically meaningless.

Having just read this thread (waiting for DVB-T for PS3, then its linux-MythTV heaven for me and my 1080P TV), I would just comment on one thing: controllers and ergonomics - they matter.

The XBox controllers are clunky, and while from a strength/finger movement perspective I can cope (I am not a "midget"), that doesn't by any means make the ergonomics an insignificant consideration. The reality is that even the Playstation controller is not particularly good - anyone who owned a Nintendo 64 can tell you that (I understand that the Gamecube controllers were similarly stellar, but have hardly any experience of them). To dismiss the importance of the ergonomics out of hand is patently ridiculous.

Just to add... I'm not a "midget" but yes I'm small... and actually I can barely use the 360 controllers, I find that I have to stop after a couple of games because the constant movement does something chronic to the joints in my fingers and especially my thumbs. So for larger people this is unlikely as big an issue, but when looking at consoles although it's not the first thing you'd think of your hand size compared to the size of the controllers and the movements needed in the games you play is important! The ps3 can sometimes be a little hard, but for me its much much easier to have hours of gaming and sore free hands :)

No offence was intended against midgets.

You gotta admit fellas, the xbox controller has come along way since the Duke!
But I can see that if you had small hands then it could feel clunky.
Personally I find the Playstation controllers a bit too small.
My hands start to cramp up after long gaming sessions.
(I have average sized hands)

But hey, in the end you'll have fun with which ever console you get this gen (even the Wii).
So enjoy yourself!

I don't know how you come to that conclusion, as this is a discussion and not a poll.

Comparing the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is almost like the Mac & PC adverts. You can't compare.

People don't buy iPods because of the specs and features - I think you'll find the same goes when people purchase gaming consoles. Nintendo Wii anyone?

As far as Blu-Ray technology is concerned, the technology is still expensive for Joe Average to replace his entire DVD collection.

When the new release DVDs come down to around $35 then perhaps I'll look at a) PlayStation 3, b) stand-alone Blu-Ray player, or c) Blu-Ray drive for PC.

Right now, my Xbox 360 Elite does it's job - it plays great games.

The PlayStation 2 had its issues too... mine still suffers that Disc Read Error hardware issue and requires servicing every once in awhile, and DNAS was horrible.

and did i ever say it was a poll? no. i referred to the majority agreeing that ergonomics and size of a controller actually matter. if you had read this page of the thread you would know that.

actually you can compare mac and pc and people do it all the time. and as stated in this thread quite a few times both consoles had advantages for different things.

well that is bound to happen (to some degree) with any product, however stating the obvious does not make you right. as you have seen by the creation of this thread that there are people who care about specifications and features. who wouldn't when they're shelling out $600+?!

honestly how can you post on a thread you haven't even read properly? atleast read the page your gona be posting on!

edit: since when are we discussing the ps2 in this thread? why don't you list some of the flaws of the ps3 instead of hyping your 360 then dissing the ps2? i think we both know why not. and stop editing your post so much!

I wasn't trying to be "right" or "hype" the Xbox 360. It is a product that suits my gaming needs at present. When history looks back at the PS3, who is to say that won't have flaws compared to a new generation of gaming hardware?

There are advantages to an earlier release as well, such as a wider selection of games (another topic previously discussed). Obviously when you look back at anything from the past and compare it to a later product there will be flaws. Just like there will be flaws if you scrutinize someone's post on a forum. I'm so sorry my capitalisation was difficult for you to read, much like this thread seems to have been. Clearly because of that you win this frivoluous argument you started. I also happen to love my PS2. Almost as much as I love my Xbox. Which sadly doesn't hold muster to my PS3, unless frame rate and textures are concerned.

Do you know if the PS3 does crossfading on tracks that are shared from Windows Media Player?
And does it show the album art and star ratings from these tracks?

Anyone wanting more comprehensive information on the features of the PS3, should read the online manual.
There were certainly a few things I didn't know about.

I've come across this topic on a whole host of other forums and they always seem to degenerate into fanboy histrionics. Its a shame really, an objective discussion sans all the emotion would be quite useful for the uninitiated I would imagine.

Anyway, at elast the OP seems to have gotten what he needed out of this. I've been a 360 user since launch day but I still remember the buzz I got when I first hooked everything up... hope you're enjoying the new toy Michael (even if you did make the wrong choice!)

As vindaloo say's there's no right or wrong system, just what is right for you.

For me it's the PS3, for others ir's the 360.

My little plug ;)
Had a wee look at metacritic, and it appears the average score for 360 is 69, and 71 for PS3.

Also worth noting is that of the top 10 360 games there are no exclusives, unlike the PS3 top 10.
