Hey well i am looking at possibly buying either a ps3 or an x-box 360.

My question is which 1?

I wont be using it for online gaming just me inside my house.

I know 360 costs about $200-$300 cheaper but is cheaper really better in this instince?

Also if you have had bad experiences with either please tell me what happened - Thanks in advance to everyone :)

I've got a PS3 and it is fantastic. I can completely justifty the extra spending, it is great fun.  I do play it on the internet, the Xbox 360 is great but if you are not using the net it completely depends on your taste in games.

i would strongly suggest a PS3. Don't get me wrong i like the xbox 360 too but i've researched this for yonks and PS3 is definately the winner for most peeps. i'll try and explain all the pros and cons i know about...

1) PS3 plays BlueRay High Definition DVDs. xbox 360 only plays HDDVD (which has just announced it's giving up against the superior BlueRay format) and only via an external DVD drive which you buy separately for about $250.

2) People argue the games are better on xbox 360. answer: there are more games on xbox 360, there is no doubt about that. this is simply because it's been out longer, however their trademark games have been throughly dissapointing to a lot of fans - halo 3 in particular was a huge let down among a lot of people i know including myself. PS3 has some amazing titles about to be released including Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4, both of which should blow each and every xbox game outa the water. Another good reason games are better on PS3 is because most gamers are also gamers via PC or MAC and you'll find the majority of xbox games that aren't released on PS3 are released on PC and/or MAC. Therefore making the PC/PS3 combo much more appetising than PC/360.

3) I know you mentioned you wouldn't be playing online however if you did decide to play online PS3 is free where as xbox costs for online play. $80 per year if i'm not mistaken.

4) PS3 has lighter controllers which are rechargable-out-of-box unlike the xbox 360s for which you have to buy the rechargable batteries separately. PS3 controllers are firmware upgradable (separate upgrades from the actual console) meaning the six axis controls will only get better as they tweak it over time. PS3 wireless is also superior to xbox 360 as mentioned in a lot of reviews.

5) PS3 has far better build quality - as proven by the "RROD - Red Ring Of Death" on the xbox 360. long story short - microsoft has been plagued with xbox 360s overheating, so much so they've had to increase their warranty coverage specifically for this problem, it usually takes about a month to get it fixed and returned and in exchange all you get for your troubles, hours on the phonetime with tech support and one month of gameless dribble is one months free online gaming (useless to you of course) which costs the consumer a measley $10 to buy.

6) PS3 supports more media than xbox 360. Divx on the PS3 is fully intergrated as opposed to the xbox and plays Divx3 and up where as the xbox 360 only plays Divx5 and up. the PS3 hard drive is much more easily upgraded - as simple as buying a 2.5inch and putting it in yourself. speaking of which the xbox 360s hard drive is half the size of the PS3s and users complain it fills too quickly.

The only thing i see that 360 has going for it is that its controllers have rumble feature. However there is already a controller due out for PS3 by the end of the year that will incorporate a rumble feature. (Personally i can't stand rumbling controllers anyway, fun for the first 5 mins and then you just turn it off).

There you go, plenty of good reasons why any smart person would go for a PS3.

bring on the flames 360 fanboys...

no problem mate. there's been a lot of confusion over exactly which one has what and a lot of other threads have been highjacked to discuss exactly that so it's good to have this one to finally sort it out.

I also have been doing alot of research on this topic for past year and a half.. PS3 vs 360 vs wii

Basically it comes down to what you want..

eg...

If you only want to play games - Then 360 would be best..

If you are after a full home entertainment package then my money is on PS3

If you want to keep fit then go with the wii :P

Myself I went with the PS3 for 5 reasons -

#1 - It has HDMI 1.3
#2 - Has Optical Out Sound
#3 - Build Quality is very high !
#4 - Built is Blu-Ray player - Yes i watch blu ray movies on it (own 6 so far)
#5 - Can run Linux from it !!! Amazing !!!

While the PS3 has HDMI 1.3, you have to make sure that the TV you're plugging it into supports HDMI 1.3 to gain the maximum possible benefits of that version; even then, some features like the xvYCC colour standard are still optional - so you have to double check that both devices have the same features.

The PS3 for example doesn't support the ability to bit stream the audio codecs Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio to your receiver (it decodes them internally and sends it out as 5.1 PCM) - it only supports the bandwidth and the deep colour standard of HDMI 1.3. (Click here and go to page 21 to see)

The Xbox 360 does have optical audio out, too.

While I own both, I should mention that I only use my PS3 for my (few) Blu-Ray movies.

i'm wanting to buy a ps3 but am waiting for it to get

1) cheaper
2) smaller
3) "better"

do you think it is conceivable that sony will make a ps3 that is "better" (ie that the current sets can't just "upgrade" online to)? if they can i will wait ... even if it's a couple of years! (well, it's gonna be 1 year soon ...)

It seems I don't even need to say it, but I have a ps3 too and I absolutely love it, I don't even feel guilty about parting with so much money being a student and all, I am not doing it justice as it's still on a CRT tv, but its just fantastic.

I am not 100% but pretty sure that the same game on ps3 or 360 you'll find ps3 actually have the better graphics too, just the way the two companies go about gaming. Sony have full time developers where as 360 get in people if there's a game they want.

And as for waiting, don't. The size may be big, so it's got some curves? It's one sexy gaming machine, all sleek and black. 360's are smaller, but has anyone seen the massive brick of a power cord? I just thought that was so funny, it's actually a brick size I swear!

Better is always "conceivable". Smaller is not a problem. But in general "better" and "smaller" is not "cheaper".

If we look at the PS2 - Released in 2000 then Four years later in 2004 the PS2 Slim was released..
So my guess would be you have another 2-3 years before we see a slim/mini PS3

As for "cheaper" I have seen PS3 down to as little as $700 at DSE

As for "Better" No.. they should not get better.. Consoles normally stay the same speed throughout their life time.
If the manufacturer makes a revision, it often has small changes- Not alot will change...
Apart from larger hard drives for the PS3
But... This is a new generation and may not follow what has come in the past.. as in PS1,PS2, Xbox, N64 ect

From what i have found.. Xbox 360 is alittle better for gaming over the PS3.
But if you are after the best gaming you shouldn't be looking at consoles anyway.
PC's will always be better as you can upgrade at will..

AmooMan: Xbox 360 is alittle better for gaming over the PS3.

how do you figure that?
1) the xbox360 controllers are rubbish and have always had a bad button layout.
2) they're bricks compared to ps3 controllers which are much smaller.
3) they also weigh a tonne
4) have no six axis controls.
5) they're not wireless right outa the box like ps3 controllers.
6) so as graphics go, both have excellent graphics. some xbox games r better than their ps3 counterparts and the other way around. i believe ps3 will eventually become the front runner going by experience as they will support and still market the console long after the xbox360 dies out. (just have to look at the ps1 and ps2 and you'll get the picture).

as for the Wii, it's great for a laugh and has some amazing new technology as well as some innovative games but still doesn't hold muster to the other consoles for graphics and "next gen" features.

After watching http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=BCNP5TtWXDs

&

http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=vTk6619dmb4&feature=related

Did some follow up research.. and he is right.. 360 can handle more graphics bandwidth..

But!! I still wouldnt think twice about buying a PS3... hold up I did :)

You are right.. yes PS3 controller is MUCH better + Built quilty of the consols is much better + It has six axis (which is cool)

So yes :) I love my PS3.. and would NOT buy a Xbox 360.. But i can understand why graphics might look better on 360.

i watched both those reviews and yes they do explain a bit. but i still believe gaming performance of a console requires more than the best graphical power. like i said there's plenty of other factors including the controllers that come into play.

at the end of that last review however that guy appears to show his true colours. his arguments for the cell processer are just frankly stupid as anyone knows a company willl try it's best to sell it's own products. duh.

his arguments against the bluray etc. seem to once again only look at graphical power when obviously the bluray is on the ps3 for many more reasons than just increasing the disc capacity for games.

i think he actually really let down his review by that rant he had at the end. his rant about the ps3's price also has no basis as like i've stated the ps3 has much more features than a 360 has and when buying a ps3 you are not just buying it for console gaming like a 360.

based on graphical power, yes unfortunately the 360 out performs the ps3 in frame rate, shading and textures. however that would be it's only clear advantage. bluray, better controllers, free online gaming and the xboxs ugliness as well as shelf-life will always drive me towards the ps3.
