dauckland: So
I'm in Mission Bay, just enjoying a Saturday beer.
The place is absolutely flooded with people playing. So many people that my mobile connection is simply dropping.
I don't think operators are coping with the load this game is generating!
I did have a try but am not a gamer so didn't really see the point.
But if you're out there catching them Pokemons please have us non players in mind as well and stop now and then so we can add test check our emails.
Thanks
Damian
And this is why mobile carriers can't implement unlimited data. I've found speeds on 4G to drop quite considerably since Pokemon but not enough to prevent me from catching Pokemon.

Went around the place on Saturday, comparing the Ingress XM locations (excluding portals) to see if any Pokemon would spawn in these high XM locations
And there does seem to be a pretty good correlation between the two - several high XM locations around my house are sadly up private driveways and no amount of standing outside someone's house managed to get me a Pokemon. However found two spots that consistently gave me Pokemon (though nothing new/rare).
Sadly there is either a new bug or a deliberate change - the nearby indicator is currently showing 3 footsteps for every Pokemon, regardless of how far they are actually away from you.
So at the moment if something new or rare shows up on your list, you really do not know how close it is and if it is worth hunting for.
Just to let everyone know I found a photo of the Pokemon Go server ....

So there is your problem....
and just for good measure

While I understand that spawns of PMn are random, it annoys to spend an hour of your life to hit an area that has been reported as being a hotspot for a certain PMn .. and finding nothing.
Not even a Weedle or Pidgey .. and then to get back to the office and see that an unrecorded PMn on your 'nearby' list and not being able to do a damn thing about it.
PMn = Pokemon
Tried of writing it out in full :-)

For people on Android, it seems like using an app that would fake your GPS position might be the way to go to raid Pokestops. Anyone tried to game the system like that?
There's a dev feature to let you do precisely this. Turn it on though and the app does show you the right place in the map, however it says it cannot find GPS signal (and you can't do anything useful).
Maybe with root you can fake this? But IDK. I imagine if it were possible (and not easy to get caught) this would have been exploited by Ingress players already?

Interesting video by LinusTechTips
I don't have any reason to try this but it would be interesting to see if it works.

I'm pretty sure that all pokemon can appear anywhere. Some pokemon are more likely to appear in certain places (i.e. water pokemon are more likely to appear at beaches, lakes, etc). So just because one person caught one pokemon at a specific place doesn't mean that it will keep appearing here in the future. Some of my best captures have been with me just walking along the road, nowhere near a pokestop or anything.
I have 2 phones with it on both on different accounts, and the same ones appear on both and can be caught on both, so it seems that they dont disappear from the map when one person has caught it.
I also got signed out and when I tried to sign in chose the wrong google account, and it doesnt offer the sign out option till you have caught your first pokemon and chosen a name so I did the keep on driving thing with that one to get pkicachu as my first one. Then signed out and went back into the one I was supposed to go in with.

Yup, we've got 4 people playing it where I work and when a pokemon shows up outside out building we usually all see it more or less at the same time and each have a chance at catching it. The CP is usually different for each of us (maybe other things too, such as moves, we haven't compared that). So it looks like the server is generating the spawning and pushing it to all the players in that area.

Regarding the Pokemon location, there is a rough and ready python script in this reddit post that overlays the current pokemon nearby over a google map interface, which avoids all that "three footsteps" stuff.
As an example, here's a screenshot of the current location of a few spawns near Dixon St in Wellington right now. Includes pokestops, spawn time remaining etc:

@tieke I have been working on these maps with dev, and deploying it to some public server instances. You can see my instances here for the Wellington CBD / Petone: https://murfy.nz/pokemon-go-maps/
Currently:
- Super reliant off Pokémon GO actually working. If no Pokémon are showing up on the maps then blame Niantic, or my Pokémon accounts got banned.
- Script restarts every 20mins. This is due to the script itself failing to update after approx. 20mins. This is a bug, and this is only a workaround until my PR gets accepted.
- Not tested to load. This is terrifying because I can picture everyone wanting to use it.
However, as an experiment I released it outside of my small group. I'd say I'll get most of the remaining bugs fixed tomorrow night.
