There is no difference between the 40GB and the 60GB PS3 with regards to PS1 compatibility.  It was only PS2 compatibility  removed, due to removal of the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU.  I would say most PS1 games work, not all but most.

Alright, let's compile the information everyone has given us, shall we?
I just want to reflect on the PS3's 'bad' features, since I believe some 'fanboys' are starting to give a biased guidance.
By the way, I own a 360 and a close friend of mine has a PS3 so I know both consoles very well.

1. Graphics: The 360 has better graphics for a good reason. Antialiasing, and advanced lighting techniques. You might have seen Gamespot's 'comparisons' of Xbox 360 vs PS3 and on the PS3, pictures of games that have jagged edges on building or say telephone lines. On Xbox 360, everything looks a bit neater and sharper compared to the PS3. The PS3's big graphical feature is its blur effects. The 360's are quite good too, but on the PS3 a bit 'stronger'. Now, some developers are now porting some games like Ghost Recon and Lost Planet to the PS3. But since they can't use antialasing and other techniques, they overload the games with blur effects. Also, Assasin's Creed. As if the blurring isn't enough already, they make the blur stronger on the PS3.

2.Backwards Compability: Except original Xbox owners, most people are not gonna care about the 360's backwards compability. I don't either, to be frank. Yet I guess there are some PS2 owners out there who still want to play their Grand Theft Autos and Final Fantasies. Well, no surprise, but on the 40GB version you can't play any PS2 games. And about the PS1 online store, its sounds good, but you still have to pay. Say you had a PS1, around 10 years ago, and had a dozen of games for it. Well, if you now put them into your 'sleek and shiny' new PS3 it will be a flash in the pan, 'cos its just wont play PS1 games. So you will have to buy them all over again.

Just wanted to point out a few things that are overvalued on the PS3. I do not want to cause a war and no, I do not work for Microsoft.

May be an idea not to call people fanboys then.  That's usually guaranteed to ruffle someone's feathers.

You don't want to start a war yet you post crap like that? Better lighting on the 360? are you taking the piss? The 360 does not have better graphics.

Have you even played a exclusive ps3 game? Not something that was made for the 360 then fob'd off to a half baked developer to port over to the ps3 (which is most games by the way!!) Uncharted is the best looking game i have seen on any console, it has amazing lighting effects.. ratchet and clank would be right behind it.. and why? Because they are exlusive ps3 games, the team that designed them didnt have the 360 to worry about, it gave them developing time on the ps3. And guess what, its only going to get better, as time goes on developers are going to get more and more out of the ps3 (as well as the 360).  There are 360 games that look stunning but theres no reason why they can't be done on ps3. Alan wake for one, but im starting to think thats vapourware.. We all know the ps3 isnt easy to develop games for, when designers get there heads around it we are in for some amazing stuff.

Btw I owened a 360 elite and now have a ps3 so i have had ample playtime on both..

As mentioned above, that is incorrent.  PS3 is still B/C with PS1.

Have a look here:
PS3 FAQ

Can I still play my PlayStation®2 games, DVD movie, and CD music collection on the new 40GB PLAYSTATION®3?
No, you can not play PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 software titles on the new 40GB model PLAYSTATION®3. Only the 60GB PLAYSTATION®3 had PS2 compatibility built in.

The 40GB PS3 has no backwards compatibility what so ever.
No PS1 or 2.

As for graphical differences between the PS3 and 360. It's negligable from what I've seen.
Some of the earlier cross platform titles (see Madden) had issues on the PS3.
I believe now though the PS3 developers have got their heads around the system and things are pretty even between the two machines.

Personally, I wouldn't consider backwards compatibility or graphics to be a reason to pick one of these two consoles over the other.

I'd agree with you on the backwards compatibility not being a factor but unfortunately graphics will always be a big factor in choosing a games consoile and it also usually decides which console wins the marketing war. as graphics go (as previously discussed in this thread) the 360 is at a slight advantage with a better framerate and better shaders. that won't last long though. expect the ps3 to catch up in that department within the next 6 months or so. It'll be interesting to be able to compare GTA4 on both consoles at the same time instead of 360 owners having to wait a year like previous Rockstar titles that were exclusive to the playstation.

Well, you're right, maybe I shouldn't have called some people fanboys, so I fully apoplogise for that.

As far as the graphics go, while some games are loaded with blur, and some are not, the graphics of both consoles are really the same. Sure, one can find out loads of specs about a console's GPU, but in the end, they really have nearly the same graphics. It's unlikely that anything will change for a while. And as for ports of games on several consoles, such as Burnout Paradise, the PS3 and the 360 have their pros and cons, and the tiny little details game reviewers notice. Otherwise, it's really the same thing, and differences in most ports of games are usually incredibly hard to find. In the end, it's the same game, the same fun.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

For economy obviously, but that doesnt mean that everyone should get a Xbox 360 straight away without thinking about what they need from the console.
I chose the Xbox 360 because it has more games. And look, I know the PS3 had a slow start and few games were released for it in the beggining, and it is "alright, because i was released a year later", well, it's not alright.
Because face it, however many titles are released for it. It is not gonna catch up. Forget it.

It's like two lines that startt from different places, and the 360 line has an early start full of games.

Assuming both consoles have the same shelf life, then yes, PS3 will eventually catch up to the Xbox 360.

PS3 games will ovetake 360 games within the next 2 years. it's just a matter of when. PS3 will also likely be supported by Sony a lot longer than the 360 will be supported by Microsoft. This is judged only by experience and sure things can change but there's no way when both these consoles die out that 360 will have a bigger list of games. Also PS3 didn't have a slow start, it sold fine, it was just released later hence the smaller list opf games (for now).

They're really not aye. Both use different GPUs and different architechture. read the last 7 pages of this thread and you'll see we've already discussed this. just saying it doesn't make it so.

Exactly why I have a PS3 and a PC, because I know anything I really want to play will come out on one of them :).
