Your background doesn't really matter too much, it is just a couple of perk points you dont need to unlock early game.
Some are a bit more quality of life than others but will not really change the back.

Most of the traits are just a slight changes, a couple have game impact like having parents or a NPC fan, TBH you dont need to worry about picking bad ones imo.
Honestly nothing in the game world you do really has an impact on the galaxy.
So don't worry about a bad choice, just casually do what you want at the time.

Thanks

For Background I'm thinking "Bounty Hunter" since I tend to get sick of games quicker than most and this sounds like it will maybe get me flying ships faster. If not that then I'll cop out with "File Not Found". But like you said, I'm less concerned with the Background since it's just a starting point and the other skills can be learned later on.

Traits seem more problematic since they have an impact throughout the entire game. I know you can remove some but I don't think you can ever add new ones. I'm unlikely to do a second playthrough (there's a very good chance I won't even finish the first one!) so I'm overthinking it now to try to maximise my chance of liking the game.

The main ones I was questioning are Extrovert vs Introvert. Half the Internet says go Extrovert because you'll always want companions with you, and the other half says go Introvert because companions are annoying and better to only use them when the mission absolutely requires them. I understand both have an impact on health throughout the entire game. I might just play Switzerland and avoid both of those traits.

I'm thinking "Dream Home", "Kids Stuff", and "Taskmaster" since the only downsides to any of them are financial; and I read that acquiring money is seldom an issue. Plus the first two sound like they give benefits fairly early on in the game, which I figure is good for someone who gets bored with games easily.

What do you think?

You are going to hate the perk system if you get bored easily aka do not want to grid.

The game's perk system is set up for you to grid and the game has this whole New Game+ going on (story spoliers), but there are powers you get after finishing it once.... and then griding more new game+.
So in short you are really going to dislike the game if you want everything or a lot of things.

So in saying that I am going to suggest a couple of backgrounds that will give you good early game QoL so you don't hate the start as much.

  • Beast Hunter for the Ballistics and Fitness. Most early guns are Ballistics and you will sprint everywhere most of the time.
  • Bounty Hunter. For the Boost Pack Training, you can't use it without the perk but you can pick it up early levels so not major. Targeting Control system required if you want to board and or steal ships. Piloting sucks unless you are going to grind ship kills and space combat is balls.
  • Industrialist, if you want to have some early additional dialouge options, lockpicking chests/doors and crafting.
  • Solider - all 3 are solid early game options with QoL

I say backgrounds dont matter because you can pick up any starting tier 1 perk point, however backgrounds help because you only get 1 perk point per level.
I would say Solider is the best option as all of them are very useful early game.

Traits, I went with really boring ones but here is my take on some options.

Do not take Extrovert if you want to do stealth gameplay or get tired of the stupid AI talking and judging your actions.
I didn't take Introvert, but i still never travel with the AI unless the forces me too. I hate them.
Have them on my ship for buffs but they are tiresome.
If you like the game talking to you and judging you and want mules and extra gun, sure they could be okay but not for me.

Dream home sounds great and 125,000 credits is pretty small, I am like level 25ish and have 350,000 credits.
I have heard that a streamer got it and then never found their home, but not sure how much is they didnt look for it aka google?

I didn't take kids stuff but hear it is really good, you get free shit every so often, and even a ship.
Credits are sort of not that important imo.... but i steal a lot of shit.

Taskmaster, eh depends on how much ship combat you are going to do, hires do cost a bit and most of them have shit stats but you can use your base companions so shrugs, wouldnt take unless you want to do space combat which is super boring and systems auto repair out of combat, so I see it a bit as a waste.

I would say both and "Dream Home", "Kids Stuff" are decent but you might have a bit of credit drain with them combinded but should still be fine, lost of missions pay out enough and if you steal shit like me :)

I would suggest taking one of the below for in game dialogue options, because they can open up possible options:

  • United Colonies Native
  • Neon Street Rat (I took this one and was happy)
  • Freestar Collective Settler

I also took Alien DNA but its been a waste so far imo, I think I got it medically removed, cant remember.
I took Terra Firma and that was pretty meh too.

If you want companions grab Hero Worshipped.

I wish I took "Wanted" because free extra damage and delivered loot in the form of walking hositle EXP is a nice bonus.

This is all my take, again do not stress too much, you can pick up most early perks if you don't get in background and game choices do not matter, there is a whole New Game+ thing (note I have not new game+ but know what the mechanics are).

Perks I would suggest getting early game for QoL if you do not pick them up with your background (in no order)

  • Persuasion
  • Ballistics
  • Boost Pack Training
  • Targeting Control systems
  • Security

Those would be my must have and the rest you get at your fancy.

Thanks, very thorough.

I started last night with the ones I said previously - "Bounty Hunter" background, with "Dream House", "Kids Stuff", and "Taskmaster" traits. Shame to hear Taskmaster might be a bit of a waste, but two out of three ain't bad I guess. I'm barely into the game at all yet, but couldn't be bothered redesigning my player in order to swap it out (for some stupid reason I spent about an hour tweaking the look of my character!). Maybe I'll enjoy space combat more that you (wishful thinking probably). Plus I read that hiring someone is a one time fee rather than an ongoing salary, so hopefully the downside of Taskmaster won't have too negative an impact.

Appreciate the advise around the perks.

Despite the somewhat disappointing reviews; I like the idea of the game, and it looks graphically very nice. Now we'll see if I have the patience and attention span to actually play it.

Good luck with your journey, a good thing about starfield is it is easy to pick up and put down.

So  all good with short attention span, I think your starting choices will be all good, no point in starting over to min max.

Hope you enjoy the space combat.... you can cheesing it if you can be bothered and become a god. The AI always shoots for the ships "centre" point... even if there is no ship there lol. Lots of YouTube videos of ships designed to do it but not required.
