billgates: Entire game binaries, game data, your recorded in game footage as well.

If that is the case, how will it affect peoples internet bills.   I can imagine people on mobile or low data caps not being especially happy if they get charged for that kind of traffic.

I'm just assuming this but I imagine that the game binaries aren't exactly uploaded to the cloud. There will be a server with all game binaries on it and you just tap into it when needed. So you'd likely just download them if you don't have a disc handy. Game data shouldn't be very substantial but game recordings might take up some data, sure.

at the risk of turning this into a fanboi shout fest, sony just announced that there will be no restrictions on sharing games with friends, selling them second hand, or anything like that. they also said there is no online requirement for the PS4, no need to 'check in' or similar.

I think Sony just won this generation of console wars before it has even begun

It was interesting to note that they appear to be moving to a paid multiplayer model. But as this is tied to PS+, its actually a model that may make fiscal sense to me. I don't play online often enough to justify paying for it on my 360, but PS+ on my PS3 makes a lot more sense, due to the instant game collection feature.

...and they also announced it would be $399 USD,  $100 less than the XBOXone,  so maybe $650 NZD?

they just dropped the mic.

Thats still a bit steep compared to the US price.

PS4
$399 USD = $506 NZD + GST = $582 NZD retailing here for $650 NZD
so $68 above converted price

compared to

Xbox One
$499 USD = $633 NZD + GST = $727 NZD and retailing here for $750 NZD
Only $23 above converted price

Suggest we wait to see the price differential for games before we declare a winner

I saw a post on reddit showing PS4 games going upwards of $100USD on Amazon. Not many people happy with that.

given that none of the games have been released yet or prices announced, that would surprise me if it were true.

if Xbox one games are 20-30% cheaper than ps4 games, then you are right, but do you really think that will be the case?

To be honest I am not really interested in PS4 information, I am sure Sony will have a competitive package with appropriate pricing and I suspect there might be another thread for PS4 information :)

What I am interested in knowing about the Xbox is that once purchased what will my average running costs be?

We'll you'll want Live, so add $10 per month. I guess if Netflix ever comes to NZ or Xbox adds support for Quickflix then you'll want to add another $15 per month (if you want that). Plus any games you want.

I'm not a big console gamer, I'm unlikely to be queueing at midnight to get a console at launch, and to date I have loathed and avoided Sony for their treatment of consumers. Instead I have an Xbox, an Xbox 360 and a Wii.

I will probably update at some point, and since I don't like the Wii-U, so it's down to a choice between MS and Sony. Based on what I have just read:
- Hardware - Marginal Win: Sony
- Pricing: Slight Win: Sony
- DRM: Huge Win: Sony

So, even though saying it almost makes me feel like I'm going to vomit out up my own skull to say it, it looks like my next console will clearly be a PS4. The only thing that makes me nervous at this poing is Sony's penchant for offering attractive features and then removing them in subsequent firmware updates.

MS has really screwed this one up. I can live with the hardware and pricing differential. I can't, and won't, live with the "always online", no lending games, hostile to used games nonsense MS is pushing.
