My son discovered a hack on YouTube that seems to work - quite a few YouTubers have tried it with success. If you have an Eevee and enough candy to evolve it, you can choose which incarnation you get by renaming it. Sparky gets you a Jolteon, Rainer a Vaporeon and Pyro a Flareon. I believe these are the names of the original trainers for those Pokemon. To do it, rename your Eevee, then close and re-open the app to ensure the name change has been registered by the game servers, then evolve the Eevee. There is speculation it won't work for the same kind of evolution twice in a row, or even twice at all. Here's a full explanation: https://youtu.be/-XnsN0MZPzg

Yeah I did this when I got told about it the other day, and it worked for me. However when friends of mine tried it after I shared it, two people said it didn't work, so I still don't think it's 100% foolproof.

There is another theory that I've seen, that this trick will work, but you still have to have the Eevee with the correct special move, either Swift for Vaporean, Dig for Flareon or Body Slam for Jolteon. However I can't confirm this as I didn't check what special move my Eevee had when I evolved it.

So either this trick is correct, or I was lucky and got what I wanted. it's probably the latter.. haha. I have yet to find enough Eevee to try it again, and next time I'll use one with the correct Special move that I want.

For people on Android, it seems like using an app that would fake your GPS position might be the way to go to raid Pokestops. Anyone tried to game the system like that?

Niantic invest a lot of effort into stopping this type of cheating and permanently blocking people who employ it in Ingress as it ruins the game play. You can bet your bottom dollar that the same effort has been put into Pokemon GO.

Ah, thanks for the info. How do you find out what your Eevee's special move is?

I have 2 phones with it on both on different accounts, and the same ones appear on both and can be caught on both, so it seems that they dont disappear from the map when one person has caught it.

I also got signed out and when I tried to sign in chose the wrong google account, and it doesnt offer the sign out option till you have caught your first pokemon and chosen a name so I did the keep on driving thing with that one to get pkicachu as my first one. Then signed out and went back into the one I was supposed to go in with.

Caution - If the TAC are anything like Ingress, then this is against the TAC and at some point you'll probably get caught out and both accounts banned. Niantic use a lot of smarts behind the scenes to detect cheating and are constantly tweaking and upgrading it.

Perhaps Special move is the wrong term. It's just the secondary attack type, which will be Dig, Swift or BodySlam.

Just go into the Eevee pokemon and it's in the character information screen, underneath the Evolve button.

- Not tested to load. This is terrifying because I can picture everyone wanting to use it.

However, as an experiment I released it outside of my small group. I'd say I'll get most of the remaining bugs fixed tomorrow night.

I know I'd definitely be keen to test this out.. however, is it easy to run in the background concurrently with the PokemonGO app? I'd imagine it is. But I'd also imagine it would be easier to view on a seperate device like a tablet, with a larger screen?

Thanks, found it. I'll take that into account when I try for a Vaporeon. Already got two Jolteon so don't need any more of them!

@tieke I have been working on these maps with dev, and deploying it to some public server instances. You can see my instances here for the Wellington CBD / Petone: https://murfy.nz/pokemon-go-maps/

Currently:
- Super reliant off Pokémon GO actually working. If no Pokémon are showing up on the maps then blame Niantic, or my Pokémon accounts got banned.
- Script restarts every 20mins. This is due to the script itself failing to update after approx. 20mins. This is a bug, and this is only a workaround until my PR gets accepted.
- Not tested to load. This is terrifying because I can picture everyone wanting to use it.

However, as an experiment I released it outside of my small group. I'd say I'll get most of the remaining bugs fixed tomorrow night.

Excellent map; based on what I saw when the servers were working this is actually all spawn locations around Wellington and not just the currently active ones?
I am heading to Wellington in a month's time and it looks like you have Pokemon up there I haven't seen yet here in Dunedin

I have been running the python script around parts of Dunedin, recording the various spawn points in those areas
Been looking for areas that might actually spawn Fire/Electric/Fighting and Rock type - so far I haven't managed to find those locations though

Check out https://pokevision.com/ for a map that lets you specify what area you want to view and shows you the active pokemon there (when the servers are working!)

Anyone else having real trouble today connecting to the server?

I was in a meeting where there was a pokestop but it couldn't connect for the whole hour, also the GPS signal message is coming up really regularly today.

Yup, I'm getting all those problems in Auckland.

Thanks, make searching behind the work proxy easier (Python script method I have been using doesn't work at work)

Do you know of any tools that record what have been available at spawn points? (Though I doubt they would exist for Dunedin)

Yes, just run it in the background - works fine.

Nope, I haven't come across anything like that yet.
