Hi all,

I recently replaced my hard drive/reformat. Before this, I could play Warcraft III but upon fresh CD install I now get:

"Warcraft III was unable to initialize DirectX. Please ensure you have DirectX 8.1 or newer installed and that you display drivers are current. DirectX may be found on your Warcraft III install CD under Options."

Info shows I have DirectX 11 and display driver update says I have best driver....help!

Specs: CPU i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz, Graphics Asus HD7850 2GB GDDR5, RAM 8GB DDR3, Hard Drive Crucial 500M ATA, MoBo Gigabyte GA-Z87, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Have you installed the latest Dx9 redist? It's seperate from the Dx11 redist (does that even exist?)

Have you installed the latest Dx9 redist? - I haven't installed anything other than what was on the Warcraft CD as the message said the required DirectX is on the disk.

It's seperate from the Dx11 redist (does that even exist?) - DirectX Diagnostic Tool reports my version as 11...

Are you saying I need DirectX 9 instead of 11?

Yes you need the version of DirectX that the game was built on, not the latest version. Download and install DX9 and it should be fine.

DirectX 9 and 11 co-exist. 11 is an incompatible upgrade to 9, so games either target 11 or 9. Quite a few give a choice on startup.

Warcraft is an older game, so it targets 8. 9 is a compatible upgrade to 8, so simply install 9 and you're away.

I was questioning whether a redistributable of Dx11 components exists, as I've never seen one. I suspect it's all been rolled into Microsoft Update.

Do other Dx9 games work? Do you have aero running? Hell, have you installed the Dx8 from the WC3 CD? Have you tried running the game in admin mode, as the PCGW article said?

No other games installed. Not running Aero. Have installed Dx8 from WC3 CD. Am running in Admin mode...appreciate your patience

Okay, so does Aero work? I believe it's based on Dx9. At this point we need to rule out it being a system-wide Dx problem. Otherwise, try another Dx9 game.

So directx is working... I'd still test a full blown game to be sure, but it seems fine. Trying compatibility mode for 98 is the only thing I can dig up now, sorry.

Oh, and could you post your DxDiag.txt? Win+R, dxdiag, Save All Information...
