After 6 months of buying the 500gb console and buying 10 games there is only 10% memory remaining.

I am looking at the following options and would appreciate any thoughts that you may have.

Option 1 Keep the existing console and buy a new 1TB console. I assume that my username/ profile will be available under both of the consoles and any games or downloads on the existing console will not appear on the new console. This is my preferred option.

Option 2. Get some form of external hard drive or use the cloud to store games. I would be concerned about this approach though as it may impact on the graphics and sound, providing graphics and sound that are inferior to games stored on the console.

Option 3. Sell my existing console and replace with a 1TB console. If I sell my existing console, I assume that the person buying this console, want have any access to games that were downloaded onto the console. Is this correct?

why not just plug in a USB3 2.5" external HDD? I think I picked up a 2TB one for around $120

are you worried about slow loading times or ?

Option 3, all you'd do is factory reset the unit. Then its back to square one and will only have on it what they put on it, they wont have any access to anything of yours.
Any downloaded paid content is tied to your account, not the console. (AFAIK)

You could uninstall any games you're not currently playing. They're tied to your account and you can re-download them later if necessary.

I have my Day 1 Xbox One. Ran out of space and bought a 2TB USB3 external HDD and have since stored all new games on there. The external HDD loads games quicker than the internal HDD (SATA2 connector only). It the easiest and cheapest route and it works in your favour regarding loading speeds.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Not exactly.. all the content is tied to your account, on the console after you sell it, then yeah.. they'll have access. However if you remove your account, and set another console as your 'home' console they won't have access to those games.

More detail descriptions of what can happen If you were to sell your console and left your account on there then the person who purchased it would have access to all your games purchased from the DLC, your whole gamertag etc etc. (don't do that)

If you unsave the login to your account, and don't set your new console to be your home console, the person will get access to all your digital games, and any new ones you purchase. (don't do that either)

If you unsave your account and set your new console as your home console the person who purchases it will be able to skip the download step for any of the games you leave on the HDD, but will still need either a disc, or to have their own digital copy if they want to play it.

xpd: factory reset the unit.

What I would do if I was running out of space on the XB1 (and have already done) is purchase a good, FAST external HDD. I keep all my games stored on my external drive because they load quicker off it than the internal one. I've currently got about 1.2TB used in games and expect usage rate to climb, so a 1TB xbox will still be a token as far as I'm concerned.

As an added bonus when you have the game data installed on an external drive you can just unplug it, take it to a friends place who has a XB1, load your profile on their XB1, plug it in, and all your games are instantly good to go.

Looks like an external hard drive is the way to go. I assume that it is easy to connect to the external hard drive to the X Box One console.

normally 3.5" hard drives require a AC power adapter. I'd recommend a USB3 portable harddrive, as the Xbox One will power it and you can hide it away

2TB USB3 portable is what I'd get, don't think it really matters on the brand - toshiba vs seagate vs Western Digital et al

Has anyone tried one of those USB boxes that take mulitple HDDs on the xbox? Im assuming it would need to be configured on a PC, but can the xbox handle a large drive? people talk about getting a 2TB drive, which really IMO is a little small.

You can plug multiple USB external HDD fine on Xbox One. Xbox One only detect USB 3.0 hub. Xbox One can detect up to 16TB. 2 external drives support max AFAIK. So 2 x 8TB or 1 x 12TB and 1 x 4TB extra.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Thanks for all of your feedback.

I will go with a 2 TB USB 3 hard drive.

Are there any brands of hard drive that are better than others?.

Also I assume that I can connect the hard drive into a USB port in the x box one and can then start saving games onto the hard drive (I assume that there will be 2 options when I go to save a game - x box one console or external hard drive). Also do I need to format the hard drive?

The USB HDD needs to be > 250 GB and USB3. Apart from that it's pretty much plug in and go.

The Xbox will partition/format it to it's own format, you won't be able to read it in a regular PC. You can then copy/move any games or apps from your internal HDD to the External. Or set it up as the default location and then things will install straight to it without prompting.

I use my internal HDD for 'apps' and the external one for 'games'. (It's not a setting, it's just how I've organized them)

I only just got a xbox one last week and I've already filled it. (EA Access + a few games I bought online quickly saw to that, 500GB or even 1TB isnt nearly enough, dont get me started on the inability to easily upgrade the internal HDD).

for about $160 you can get a usb 3 2TB drive, i was going to buy this one from noel leeming (surprisingly the cheapest place i found).

Might just get a usb 3 enclosure instead and shove in a standard 3.5" drive however.

It looks like the local prices have dropped a bit! A few months ago I got this one from Amazon for ~$40 cheaper than I could find in NZ. That was for my PS4 (I ripped it out of the case and installed it internally) but I imagine that it'd work with an Xbox too.
