Its taken a while but it is out of beta

https://community.ui.com/releases/EdgeRouter-3-0-0/33ee3852-b5db-453e-ad14-430bc218c02f

Overview
EdgeRouter 3.0.0 includes a new redesigned web interface and adds support for WireGuard VPN.

WireGuard VPN
Allows you to connect the EdgeRouter to another WireGuard peer to set up different VPN types.
Site-to-Site VPN - Connect to a WireGuard peer and dynamically or statically route traffic between the sites.
VPN Server- Allows remote WireGuard clients to connect to the EdgeRouter and access the LAN.
VPN Client - Connect to a VPN provider and route traffic over the WireGuard VPN with Policy-Based Routing.

Updated Web Interface
The interface has been updated and adds a new section for configuring WireGuard.

Improvements
Redesigned and updated the web interface.
Added dark mode support option for the web interface.
Added support for WireGuard VPN. Configuration is possible using both the web interface and CLI.
DHCPv6 now ignores advertise messages with none of the requested data and missed status codes.
Added support for remote access to the local web interface via UISP.
Added new left menu which replaced tab based navigation.
Added new version of ports widget on the main header.
Added system option to theme system settings.
Added the CPU and HW status to the top bar, increased the size of two-row ports, and added temperature alert.
Improved security & stability.
Added factory default firewall configuration, dropping all incoming traffic from eth1
Added filename validation for restoring configuration uploads.
Added logging of the WebSocket client IP address to allow brute-force attack detection.
Implemented new validation checks for passwords.
Disabled SSH in factory default config.

Bugfixes
Fixed issue with DHCP renewal when using a /32 netmask.
Fixed restoring of configuration backup.
Fixed link to UISP application running on UISP Console.
Fixed issue with upgrade in Chrome.

Known issues
[Upgrade] - In previous firmware versions, an incorrect error message may appear in Chrome, indicating that the firmware upgrade failed after the upload completed. To finalize the upgrade, simply close the error modal and restart the router using the button in the header.
[DPI] - Sometimes, DPI is reporting wrong rx/tx counters.
[Offloading] - L2TP IPSec traffic is not being offloaded on Mediatek-based routers (ER-X, ER-X-SFP, EP-R6).
[Offloading] - VLAN traffic is not being offloaded on ER-12.

Only thing here is it's not a router I would trust from a security perspective. It's still basically out of support. Ubiquiti even state it's "Vintage" now.

Why I say that?

Sure, nice new interface and Wireguard (finally!) but it is just putting lipstick on it. I don't disagree with anyone in saying they were great routers but Ubiquiti have basically made their point clear in regards to support.

It's still running Debian 9.13 where long term support was July 6, 2020 to June 30, 2022 and is now in an unsupported state and still running an ancient Linux kernel.

Kudos for Ubiquiti doing something with this line even if it is just bringing a long rumored interface change and Wireguard but this is like previous releases - more incremental and still full of CVE's.

But I would never recommend anyone buy one these days on the New market (if they can find one). VyOS on a Mini PC (if you want to try Vyatta) or Mikrotik are my go-to if you wanted something a bit more advanced.

Its also got plenty of known bugs, eg you cannot setup the Wireguard interface via UI. As above, lipstick on a pig that adds no real performance value.

Out of interest, where do you see the Unifi router line up in all of this?  Particularly for someone who needs some advanced features, but not sure about the Mikrotik learning curve.  e.g. Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra?

They're pushing everyone to UniFi and have moved away from the great Vyatta based routers.

Advanced features - depends what it is. UniFi is Prosumer, I wouldn't say it offers too many advanced features (eg - it's still hard to use a routed subnet). Mikrotik may look difficult but it honestly isn't and once you learn it, it's easy to manage, super quick and is rock solid. Mikrotik also build RouterOS to almost every older device so even if you pick up an old RB951G to play around with you'll find it can also run the latest and greatest RouterOS with ease with all features.

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra has been a buggy mess for many people. The problem is Ubiquiti had a once great product with the EdgeOS line that appealed to technical people and have not really replaced that product line with anything else. If Ubiquiti were still supporting the EdgeOS line, I would still be using it as it was so well built and with passion.

I've been sitting on the fence for ages on diy soft router to replace the er-x, which would be able to run a bunch of additional services.

As for like for like replacement, there's nothing from ubiquity that interests me, I actual think the closest is something like

I switched from an EdgeRouter to Microtok a few years back hoping for a better experience given the rave reviews it gets here on Geekzone and I was quite disappointed. The builtin Wifi is pretty poor when it comes to latency sensitive apps like Zoom/Teams calls. I ended up disabling the Microtik Wifi and brought in an Orbi to do the Wifi which saw a marked improvement -- while I was testing one or the other I could tell which Wifi I was attached do during Zoom call, it was that bad. I also found out that it doesn't support port forwarding and the UPnP(?) needed by the Xbox/PS at the same time. It was really confusing until I found a post by a Ubnt engineer in their forums saying that if you add any port forwards, it disables UPNP. I had to decide whether to make my SO happy and enable UPNP(?) or port forwarding. Ended up doing the former to keep the peace in our household!

Swithcing back to EdgeRouter a easy decision when we moved into our new house. It fits seamlessly into our comms cupboard with Ethernet to desktop PCs and smart TVs and paired with the Orbi it works. The Xbox works fine under default settings and adding a port forward for ssh/http/https doesn't break the Xbox. No Wifi yes but it works fine with the Orbi despite not being the same 'ecosystem'.

YMMV and I'm sure I will give Microtik another try one day but will stick with my EdgeRouter for now as it meets my needs whereas the Microtik did not.

@KiwiSurfer IMHO, UPNP is a massive security risk and these days I recommend always keeping it disabled. The Mikrotik can do it absolutely fine if required.

But that is a little off topic now 😊 - I agree, Mikrotik WiFi built into routers isn’t great but that’s easily resolved with an access point. I think the majority of your problems come down to configuration over anything else and configuration on a Mikrotik can be as simple or as complex as you like.

MikroTik wifi using Qcom drivers is miles better than it used to be, particularly from ROS 7.19.3 onwards. I never would have used it for wifi a few years back but have been pleasantly surprised recently.

Thankfully edgerouter doesn't have WiFi, and therefore it's not a requirement for it's replacement
