I just bought the Smart Modem 3 for wifi 6 (amongst other things) so would prefer to keep using it 🙂

Having said that, I have an update - I installed a rather old Netcomm USB wireless adapter stick I picked up (many years ago - I think from PB Tech) and it works! He can see the router and connect to it, using its bundled software. He seems to be connecting on 2.4G (maybe that's all it supports? It is fairly ancient) but it's working.

With this in mind, does this make any difference to troubleshooting? Is it likely something with the built-in wireless on his desktop, or something to do with the router? My inclination is the former, as every other device in the house can connect to the new router without any issues.

Did you do the Windows 11 troubleshooting as recommended?

I seem to remember that routers tend to have the same SSID for 2.4 and 5ghz.

Some devices (usually older) that can't support 5ghz, can't 'see' the 2.4 channel when the ssids are the same.

Can you make a guest ssid with just 2.4ghz and see if the device can see that?

Actually, no - good point. He's (temporarily) online again but I'll give the network troubleshooter a try tomorrow (he's asleep now).

Your additional info about the MB didn't show up. Intel did publish this for some of their wifi chipsets.

"Depending on the Wi-Fi driver version used, Intel® Wireless Adapters supporting 802.11ac may not show Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks in their scan lists, and as a result, might not be able to connect to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) capable wireless routers and access points, even at 802.11ac speeds.

Intel recommends using the latest driver version (Download the latest Wi-Fi driver) for your Intel® Wireless Adapter since issues get resolved and new functionality gets added to newer driver versions." https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000054799/wireless.html

Does the Smart Modem allow turning off the ax mode in wifi type?

Have you tried manually adding the network? As sometimes I do this if it cannot find the broadcasted SSID and it works.

Thanks for this, I checked this morning (quickly) and he has an AMD chipset. However will have a look at the ax setting tonight.

Thanks also for all the suggestions so far, I do appreciate them. Only having a limited window to do troubleshooting doesn't make this easier, sadly - but will go through things tonight.

The wifi is an inbuilt one on his AMD motherboard which was purchased new last year. Until I changed out the router yesterday this worked flawlessly. I'm starting to think it might be something to do with that - but will need to do some more digging.

To try and narrow it down you could boot to a (recent) linux distro on a live USB and see if it's working from there.

If so, that will point to it being a windows or driver issue.

Peter Reader told me OP's motherboard is likely to be Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC mATX Motherboard For AMD Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs Socket AM4 with AC referring to onboard wifi. Probably a Realtek driver issue.

Just ran Belarc on his machine and you're right, it shows the following info:

Board: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME B550M-K ARGB Rev X.0x

CPU: 3.70 gigahertz AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core

Onboard wifi reports as: ASUS PCE-N15 11n Wireless LAN PCI-E Card

So with this in mind, is it just a case of updating the driver for the on-motherboard wifi and he should be good to go? How do you do this in Windows 11? (I'm a bit of a noob with it 😕)

Just follow the recommended Microsoft prodedure … it shows how to do it at certain stage. I‘d recomment to link the susipicious computer with a temporarily ethernet cable to the router.

The "latest" driver from is dated 2015: https://www.asus.com/nz/networking-iot-servers/adapters/all-series/pcen15/helpdesk_download?model2Name=PCEN15

Download it and run the installer.
