Well, the rub is, that the most popular one is Unifi, but Unifi and Edgerouter are different families and have different suits of management software. Some people on forums have had troubled configuring these.

So what I wanted is to find out from Edgerouter owners, which ones they are using and if they are happy with them.

Not sure why anyone would have issues configuring a Unifi with an edgerouter? With the unifi controller running it literally takes 30 seconds to run the set-inform command and all done! You only need to run the controller initially to configure the AP initially.

Extremely surprised to hear your Mikrotik died. I've put out a hell of a lot of them and have literally had two fail - and that was just the power supply failing.

You could run a cheap UniFi controller on a Raspberry Pi, oDroid or other SBC. I was actually thinking of for some time to create a virtual instance running a UniFi controller for the Geekzone community to use (I'll need a way to pay back the direct costs to running another virtual instance however).

From here you'll be able to set-inform the cloud controller and control your network directly via the cloud controller. If I was to do something like this I'll need a bit of interest but for some of you it may be a way to get rid of some local infrastructure.

Just an idea anyway...

So this is the one that died on me just in a few months.

Practically speaking it was very good for me, up until that point, but some people complain that the WiFi signal is a bit on a low side, since it does not have external antennas.

As for Mikrotik, I'm not sure what happened to it. It starts, but exhibits massive packet loss. I factory reseted it a few times, so I'm quite sure it's not me configuring it incorrectly. Even on basic settings right after the reset only about one ping out of 5 to any internet site come through and the ping time is in the range of 300-700ms, where normally it's under 100. (I have a long ADSL line, don't be surprised). So basically internet in the house become practically unusable. No streaming, sites loading taking minutes, no online gaming. I had to pull out an old router that I used before mikrotik to get the thing running again, while I replace the mikrotik.

And before some one points that out, I'm aware that Edgerouter is an overkill for a bad ADSL line - I've just wanted to play with it for quite a while now, so now when I have an actual justifiable reason to buy a new router I'm getting it ;)

If you buy a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X  (ER-X) - which is cheaper than an EdgeRouter Lite - you can use it to power one Ubiquiti access point.
The ER-X suits a 100Mbps or 200Mbps UFB connection, but probably not gigabit UFB.

I'm using this system on 100Mbps HFC cable with good results.

The latest Ubiquiti software is much more user-friendly than earlier versions.

It's not really an overkill for ADSL. I'm looking into getting an ER-X as I have an old Draytek 120 that can do bridge mode and can make the ER-X the gateway.

This thread on their forums notes differences/performance between the ER-X and ER-Lite models. It seems on an one-way iperf test, both can do near gigabit speeds but the ER-X slows a bit on a bidirectional iperf test. The ER-Lite has a 64bit processor and ER-X has a 32bit one which would probably explain why the ER-Lite is better in a birectional iperf test

What's the problem with the controller? Can't you run it on your desktop? Or does it have to be always on?

I run both the EdgeRouter POE + Edgeswitch 8 - and 2 Unifi AP's off this. 

I use the Unifi controller software on a LAN connected PC, AOK. 

You just launch it when you want to configure / monitor anything - or just flick the wife's phone off the connection when the kids say she's watched enough Lightbox ;-D

@zespri @GregF it is recommended to keep your UniFi controller on for several reasons also some people don't like leaving a desktop computer operating all the time. There is now a managed UniFi cloud controller available free of charge to Geekzone members here to save some resources on your desktop + giving you the ability to purge the hell out of Java.

Just on another note with the help of @BarTender we've established the maximum routing capability of the Edgerouter Lite is around 850Mbit. As people post tests done on other routers I'll mark ones more suitable for Gigabit connections.

However 850Mbit is still damn fast.

Have you done a factory reset and tried again?

I'm wondering if various firewall and port forwarding rules you may have configured.
