I am trying to set up internet sharing between my desktop running Windows XP and my iPaq 4155 running Windows Mobile 2003.

I am can get the iPaq to connect to my desktop through ActiveSync without any problem. However, when I am not trying to connect through ActiveSync, but through an internet sharing connection I run into problems.

When I click on "Internet via [my desktop]" through the Bluetooth Manager on my desktop it says it connects. This is also verified when looking under the My Bluetooth Places on the desktop. My problem starts in the "Network Log On" screen on my iPaq after it connects to the desktop. It is asking for a User Name, Password, and Domain. I have tried my XP User Name and password, I have tried it with and without a domain listed, and I have tried to create a new user on my desktop. However, I keep getting the same results.

The "Connecting" notification box comes up saying:

Connection to: BT Network Access
Using: Bluetooth Null Modem
Dialing: Connect...

And it never completes the connection. It just stays in a perpetual state of saying that it is in the process of connecting. I have made sure that all of my settings are correct with internet sharing on my broadband access. I have also tried it with and without my firewall on.

Can someone help me?

Thanks,

rrhutch

The Pocket PC will ask for a user name and password if the configuration on the desktop is not correct.

Look in our Bluetooth Guides for the specific guide for your Pocket PC type and check step-by-step without leaving anything unchecked. If still fails to connect, look in the same Bluetooth Guides for the article with a checklist to use when the LAN connection is not working.

Pay special attention to

  • Personal software firewalls
  • IP address on Bluetooth adapter on your desktop must be 192.168.0.1 if using ICS
  • IP address conflicts with other IP in your LAN
  • Personal software firewalls
  • ICS must be from adapter connected to the internet to Bluetooth adapter
  • Personal software firewalls

Thanks for the info. I am able to get it say it is connecting with out prompting for log in informaiton. I think my problem now is that I do not have a DNS server listed on my Bluetooth Adapter. My broadband connection is set to obtain DNS server info automatically. Therefore, how I can get the actual DNS server address? I have tried ipconfig, but found it does not give DNS info.

    Thanks.

Ok, here is the run down.

    1) I have my ICS set up
    2) I have my DNS server information entered on the Bluetooth Adapter
    3) The IP address is set properly on the Bluetooth Adapter
    4) I have my firewall disable so that it does not conflict
    5) It no longer prompts me to a user name and password when trying to connect

However, when the "connecting" dialog window comes up on my iPaq it just continually says "connecting".

Any ideas on what else I can do?

What kind of broadband do you have ADSL or cable modem? If you have ADSL, what's the IP address for the modem, when looking from inside your network? If it's 192.168.0.1 then it's causing this.

I am on cable with a dynamics IP address. I have rebooted a few times so a chance of IP conflict should be avoided. I also ran ipconfig and that were not the same address.

I am using Symantec, but I have had it disabled when trying to set up my BT Network.

Is it OFF, or have you unchecked the box "Start with Windows"? Simply being OFF doesn't mean it'll not interfere - I've seen it before. There's a box where you can have it loading with Windows or not.

Dude i had the exact same problem as you.. you can check out the thread http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=8&TopicId=1100

but basically all i did to fix it.
    1) enable internet sharing for your network
    2) Configure the BT network addaptor within the firewall software to enable all comunication. mine was McAfee and the setting is found in "Configure Advance Setting/Configure Network Addaptor Settings"
    3) Connect via Active sync from the PPC.
    4) Connect Internet via _______ (on mine the Stupid login screeen asking for Username password and domain won't come up anymore)

then the network connection will start up and your computer should verify this but for some reason after a short while. that network connection will disconnect.. However.. the internet still works even though the only active connection bettween the PPC and PC is the active sync
so i just disregard the fact that the network connection is gone.. and use the net on my ppc as per normal....and it still runs fine til this day

    anyway hope that helps...
