Just stopped at Dick Smith in New Lynn to pick up a network switch that is unexpectedly urgently required for a client while I was on site.

The staffer indicated that they no longer sell these. Plenty of DSL routers etc but no 5/8 port network switches. I thought things were bad when they stopped selling solder years ago. Sheesh.

It beats me how DSE is still trading. I guess it must be a tax write off for someone.

Geez, even OfficeMax sells little 5 port switches! For less than $20.

In one of the discussions on how bad DS has gotten, someone mentioned that they stock pink hair dryers.

I wonder what Mr Dick Smith thinks of his former company.

Some private equity wide boys bought the whole thing for $20 mil a few years ago (both NZ and Aust stores) so as long as it continues to clean its face, I guess they are happy to hold on to it,

I did exactly that, on recommendation from the guy at Dick Smith.  Didn't know Jaycar were there.

I dont even bother going to dick smith anymore.

I tried to buy a nice camera on boxing day - DSE had a nice stand of about 20 camera slots, but only 3 models in stock.

They have only two staff at the napier store on at a time - you walk up to the counter to try and pay them before you walk out the door, but no one is ever there to take your money.

I buy about 2 ipod nanos a year - they dont seem to have them in stock.

The store was remodelled a couple of years ago. Now its like mcdonalds. Cold, Dark, Concrete and Un-Inviting.
They over did it with the grey everywhere.

They dont sell a laptop over $1,000

Actually on boxing day I lol'd because harvey norman was packed wall-to-wall but two doors down in the same shopping centre, dick smith was as dead as the proverbial dodo. And there were still no staff.

They sell everything electronic that you dont want.

I was there at Xmas time and agree 100%

What a shame the DSE of 10 years ago was one of my favourite shops. It has been ruined.  Jaycar is like the DSE of old and I like it.
