Hi there looking for some advice.

I play on xbox live with a guy who lives 15 houses away from me and he gets 20mbps faster download, 7-8mbps faster upload and 30-35ms lower latency according to his xbox network statistics, than I do.

We are both on VDSL with spark, we cant get UFB in our area, is there anything i can do to increase my speeds? Or am i doomed?

cheers
Halatau

Hi mate,

A bit more information may be required.

  1. What is his connection rates from the VDSL modem to Spark as opposed to yours? (You can check this in your modem settings)
  2. Are you both playing on ethernet cables, or Wi-Fi?
  3. Is your home connection shared between multiple people? (And if so, are they heavy users?)

Cheers,
Ven

1) do not use wifi this will help a lot.

2) post the results of s speedtest while connected via an ethernet cable we should be able to see if something is detrimentally bad.

Use a couple of 100M network cables and a few network switches and piggy back off his connection.

It's probably line quality to your house and/or noise on the line, or his xbox is lying or yours is, look and see if you have a master filter installed.

Remove wireless from the question if your using it. For latency consistancy, Wireless will not be your friend.

As your on VDSL, you are limited to what profile DLM puts you on for your interleavings setting. There is no option to turn it off like ADSL, One of the trade offs.

30ms differance, i would put you on a 16ms profile compared to 1ms for your friend. Obviously in this situation hes getting the best results, while you your at the other end of the scale.

Assuming your not in a 998 area (Howick currently is the only one AFAIK) that difference in upload speed i would question a tad. Mind quoting DSL Sync rates rather than speedtest results from your xbox? - would not surprise me if your upload is actually that slow due to satuation which could be another explanation for higher latency.

A fixed wireless link using a couple of UBNT NanoStation loco M5's is the answer.

Latency over a proper fixed wireless link will be no more than a few milliseconds over that sort of distance. System Link gaming would be possible as well as giving you access to a better internet connection.

Hey guys thanks for the replys

My mate is away for the weekend so i will endeavor to get his stats connection rates from his router

We are both using Ethernet cables to connect to our spark routers, when the spark technician installed the new modem and cabling he said there was a master filter installed with the new installation (i dont know how to double check this and took his word on it) But my modem connects to a different jack point than my telephone.

I am sharing the router with one computer (daughter, who views youtube and plays web based games) and two phones, the phones aren't heavily used though, facebook emails that's about it.

How do I do the speedtest results? is that go on speedtest.net then copy and paste the results in here?

Would you think a new modem/router would help over the spark Huawei HG630b?

No. There would not be much benefit in replacing that modem. Having all your devices cabled will help with the network internally.

Its most probably the best your line is going to do if you have had a master filter installed by the technician. There are some cases where they have done shotty jobs and need to come back and fix it up, but I cant be certain this has happened in your case.

You mentioned you were on VDSL and that your modem plugged into a special jack for the VDSL? Is this correct? If you can log into your modem and let us know the sync speeds for VDSL that may be useful.

It sounds like you got a similar line to me. My sync speeds are 3.5Mbps upload and about 17~18Mbps download. (It has synced at about 20Mbps before). I am on the border of being able to get VDSL. And if your friend is 15 houses closer to the cabinet they may be getting a 10Mbps upload and about 30~40Mbps download. Or you may be connecting to different cabinets entirely.

As for the ping latency, you friends line may be more stable and may have a better DLM profile, its really too hard to tell from the information provided.

Let us know your sync speeds. If they are really really bad sometimes it may be better latency on ADSL. But you will have a slower upload.

I wouldn't rush off and buy a new modem at this stage.

How do i quote the DSL Sync rates?

For HG630, Enter http://192.168.1.254/ in browser address bar, login as user: admin, password: admin
Go to WAN menu, then ADSL & VDSL tab, and copy and paste the Line Status info.
Would be good to see the same for your friend down the road.

Are you both in the same cabinet area?  Houses near the centre of the cabinet area have the best VDSL DLM profile with fastest speeds and lowest latency.  You can guess where the cabinet is where you live, e.g. in the example below the cabinet will be in the middle of Trias Road, and if you lived at the end Tetrarch Place you will never get VDSL as fast or with as low latency, and there is not much you can do about it except wait for UFB.

This is an assumption and not really reliable. Here is an example of my cabinet zone. Ive highlighted the cabinet location in the pic....
