And there goes my third Tempest.

Temperature sensor failed overnight, now just intermittent readings and the battery isn't charging despite it being another sunny cloudless day. The app shows the sensor has failed and their troubleshooting steps haven't fixed it.

They just keep sending me lemons, each one has only lasted several months before failure.

Back to customer support we go again.

Friend of mine had a similar problem, battery wouldn't charge properly any more so several sensor readings started degrading as it switched to limp-home mode. They sent him a replacement, no questions asked, but you have to wonder how they're making money if they have to keep replacing them.

Yeah mine kept losing connection to the hub. They are sending me a replacement. They must go thru a few of them!

The local API is great and the sensors seem pretty good, but I wouldn't buy again I don't think.

They're effectively a weather company so make money of a huge network of these being operational.

We have a Pantech HP2553 (FO) installed a bit over two months (bought about a year earlier!).  Linked to both WU and WOW.  So far working flawlessly.  Battery supposedly backup only, in case of extended period without sun, otherwise draws power from a solar charged capacitor.  Not certain how well the plastic will hold up under UV.  Plastic on our previous FO based Pantech (WH2900, ~4.5 yrs old), has discoloured but is otherwise still functional.  Currently running both for comparison (new model temp recordings significantly less affected by direct sunlight & generally in close agreement with surrounding stations).

1.  Re the Tempest. Has anyone run a comparison between the haptic rain recording and a standard cup type rain gauge (or a simple physical rain gauge)?  Sorry, have not checked back through all previous 28 pages!

2.  I see five stations in the Hibiscus Coast area (say east from Okura - Dairy Flat - Wainui - Puhoi) on the Tempest map (https://tempestwx.com/map/35285/-36.6243/174.6938/14).  In the same area there are ~40 stations on the WU map, but none of the local Tempest stations seem to be included.  Is it not possible (or is it difficult) to link the Tempest stations to WU or is that just 'coincidental' (none of the five wanted to link to WU)?

Don't know about the official Tempest software but you can do it if you run WeeWX, the friend I mentioned with the Tempest uses that to feed WU and others from it.

I got mine recalibrated on my current unit. I wasn’t happy with what it was recording, I was pretty confident it was under-reporting the volume. I bought a manual gauge and went through the steps to get it done and afterwards they were pretty much identical.

Thanks for both replies @neb & @corksta.

My weather station rain gauges seem to mostly record 15% - 30% more rain than my manual gauge but hard to be certain the weather station recordings are too high as the manual gauge is ~20 m away on the opposite side of the house and is close to fruit trees.  Nowhere suitable to locate it near the weather stations.

At least their customer service is excellent. One email to them and they can see it’s faulty so there’s now a (fourth) replacement on its way. Fingers crossed this time.

They also said they don’t require faulty units to be returned to them anymore.

Interesting regarding your other point about returns. Could be worth tearing down your old unit to figure out why it failed.

You're welcome to my old one if you want to have a play 🙂.  I just received a new one from them after my first one (purchased August 2021) just stopped transmitting.  I could reconnect through the usual procedure but it would only send a couple of readings then stop again.  I definitely don't have the skills to diagnose those sort of problems!

If you're in Orkland you could probably also have the one from a friend of mine that I mentioned for teardown, pickup would be in west Auckland.

+1 since 2019 in use without the console but a Raspberry Pi as a direct weather data and webserver instead.
