@edge I'll be keen on that! Pretty sure you're just down the road from me. Have flicked you a PM.

Tinkerisk:

+1 since 2019 in use without the console but a Raspberry Pi as a direct weather data and webserver instead.

What are you using to receive the data, an SDR? I've got a Meteostick from back when they were still sold but was wondering what I'd do if that gave up the ghost.

corksta: At least their customer service is excellent. One email to them and they can see it’s faulty so there’s now a (fourth) replacement on its way. Fingers crossed this time.

They also said they don’t require faulty units to be returned to them anymore.

So.... What's inside? Could you fix it with chewing gum and a paperclip?

Nope, as far as I can remember, I soldered a CC1101-868MHz (EU frequency here) module on a PCB interfaced to the GPIO of a Pi Zero who does all the „hard work.“ You need to analyze the Davis protocol.

- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

Right, but that's just a GP radio module, what are you using to drive it?

??? The Pi directly via software?! (and WeeWX) It‘s not exactly a plug and play solution.

If you connect the radio module to a Pi, exactly nothing will happen (well, maybe an LED will light up on the module). What are you using to drive the radio, and to decode the Davis transmissions and feed them into WeeWX?

Again, I control the module via SPI directly from the Pi Zero, decode it and hand it over to WeeWX as well. There is a CC1101 driver available for WeeWX. What makes you think, nothing happens?

So if I connect the radio module to a Pi running WeeWX it'll configure the radio hardware correctly and receive and decode the custom Davis comms protocol and process it?

Correct, with a small additional davis2weewx driver s/w. Since it's been a while, it's also possible that I used an RFM69CW module - I'm not entirely sure. But that would just be another radio connected via SPI and doesn‘t change the principle.

edit: confirm, yes it was a HopeRF RFM69CW module I used at that time and a Python logger script.

My Tempest died after a year- am in Wellington. Batttery not charging and device not communicating. Does anyone have a good alternative?

Possibly Ecowitt Wittboy, a few people on this thread have them, haven't heard any complaints about them yet.

I bought the Tempest because it seemed like a simple all in one solution. I am not a weather nerd at all.

My basic requirements were about knowing more about the weather in my suburb / property:
- wind speed
- temperature
- hours of sunshine
- rainfall measurement

My wife was trying to use Tempest to work out what to grow / when in the vegepod. We tried automation (watering) but it was too unreliable.

All home grade :)

In that case @eonsim's suggestion sounds fine. The Wittboy is pretty pricey though, you could also look at their more traditional ones (anemometer + tipping-bucket rain gauge) which are quite a bit cheaper.

If you want it specifically for agricultural purposes you could also look at an Arduino or ESP32 with a soil moisture sensor attached to check on what needs watering and how much.
