@shim99 @Talkiet I have a spare Tempest that I'm doing a full tear-down of and so far, I've recorded the part numbers for the lithium charging and lightning detection chips. I'm moving upstairs over the weekend with a view to cataloguing the various sensors on the top board so I'll report back here once I have that information.

Did you ever make any progress on this ?

Stu: I've lost another Tempest. That's two in three years. Sensors started failing and then the battery followed.

I've lost two as well... they won't replace the second...

I've read they'll offer a replacement at half price. Two units in three years, even at half price the cost overall doesn't stack up.

Ge0rge: Depending on the chip size, I've possibly got the ability to do smd.

The chips are 3mm x 3mm

I gave up and purchased an GW2001 Wittboy from Amazon AU when they had a sale on at ⅓ the cost of a Tempest. It integrates straight into HA now so very happy.

I also found the local integration of the GW2001 to be excellent. Very straightforward. The 1st party visualisation is not as nice as the Tempest stuff - but overall it works for a lot less money.

If anyone is looking to buy a GW2001 Wittboy at Amazon AU, they won't show up unless you have an Aussie address so I used this company and was very impressed. Shipping was fast and more affordable than YouShop (they don't accommodate AU) which has got crazy expensive lately.

Yes I had seen that, but I have already paid enough to provide them with weather data... :)

After 2 Tempest replacements provided by Weatherflow my 3rd unit stopped working recently. The first replacement was due to sensor failure a month or so after purchase, and the second had some sort of aerial issue with a range of about 25m and low signal strength even when next to the base station. The 3rd unit ran for about 3 years mounted on a pole 7m above the ground and then the sensors failed. On opening it up I discovered it was absolutely full of ants who had nested inside and coated the circuit board and sensors with goo.

Decided to revert back to a mechanical weather station so chose the Ecowitt HP2551. Working well so far and has very good range (70m away through a shelterbelt and still 3 out of 4 bars)

While researching this weather station I came across this website https://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start which had very comprehensive info about all the various Fine Offset / Ecowitt manufactured variants ie Ambient, DNT, Froggit, GARNI, Huygens, Misol, PanTech, ProTech, Steinberg, Tycon, Waldbeck, Watson.

I was after an Ecowitt WH51L soil moisture sensor via Amazon Australia however it was one of the few Ecowitt items not available for delivery to NZ. I emailed Ecowitt support and they enabled NZ shipping within 24 hours. The sensor was available from the Ecowitt shop or Ali Express but was about 30% more than Amazon AU when shipping was taken into account.

Interesting, I purchased all my ecowiit stuff from Amazon AU with no issues.

Latest was my weather station - about 6ish months ago

Looks like you can avoid the additional shipping by picking up a version here from AliExpress. I get a price of $248 incl shipping.

Something to note for Tempest users at least who have Weatherflow send data on to Weather Underground. I thought there was a problem with the Air Pressure data as I’ve had some days where the Air Pressure according to Weather Underground stay exactly the same all day.

I logged a ticket with Weatherflow and they think some rounding system has been implemented by Weather Underground as they showed some pressure readings from my station (in inHg) which would of been easy to round.

Over Christmas my tempest started to run out of battery power on days when there was not much sunlight. I contacted them and asked about replacing the battery.

They sent a reply saying it probably wasn't the battery but I could get another one for half price...

Anyway $20 on Aliexpress (I could only find a pack of three batteries) and a 10 minute soldering job, it is fixed... hopefully for another 5 years

Would you be able to post a link to the battery/seller you used, please? Might have a look at trying the same.
