I decided to take the gamble on Orca which were less than half the price of Cavius for: 7 x Smoke, 1 x Heat and 1 x Basic Controller. I got the home pack + 1 more smoke alarm from Mitre10 price promise/matched to Placemakers.

Pairing the alarms to the basic controller, testing and install was easy/trivial as expected.

Two minor annoyances with the base plate/mounting system:

1: There is seemingly no orientation marker/guide on the base plate, so you need to use psychic powers if you care about the orientation of the logo once fitted to the plate.

2: The supplied screw anchors combined with the base plate hole design means the plate may tilt slightly instead of sitting flush/level on the ceiling (the base plate sits on top of top of the anchors). I had to add some washers under the sides to prevent them tilting when screwing in.

Apparently you can get magnetic base plates that sit flush for them where you can rotate the logo orientation to your OCD hearts content. I have let it go and decided I won't notice after awhile :)

Also apparently they do have a smart controller coming out in future for internet/app connectivity, I decided I didn't care about this for now as I still have the couple of Google Nest alarms in place.

Passed the reno building consent inspection, they did check all rooms and take pictures but didn't actually run the test (I guess they value their hearing).

Anyway hoping for long battery life and no false alarms!

rscole86: As a brand, I've been very happy with my Cavius interconnected smoke/heat alarms. They've only gone off twice in the 7+ years we've had them installed, both for legitimate triggers.

Does your wife only cook twice every 7 years, same as mine? :)

my wife is a foodie and cooks great meals. If she needs to use a griddle, cooking steaks or anything that needs charring she uses the BBQ. Our smoke alarms have never seen active service. Another vote from me for Clavius. Don’t even know they are there.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Keep your receipt. We've had a couple of Orca ones give up after 2 years.

How did you know the Orcas had failed?

They won't stop beeping.

The troubleshooting stated there might be dust in the sensor, but even a high power dyson cleaner or an air cleaner couldn't fix it.

Having just been woken up rudely in the night by both of our hallway smoke alarms chirping, I have discovered that despite buying them within the last 5 years, they have manufactured dates of 2012!

Quell Ionisation units, as it turns out.

I quite liked the aesthetics of them and they quietly went about their business for the time we had them, so my question is this: despite the multiple 1 star reviews on every brand sold at Bunnings and Mitre10, does anyone have any positive experiences with Quell branded detectors?

I seem to remember about the time that photoelectric units were being recommended over ionisation units Bunnings for one example had bins of the older units on special near the checkouts. Not doing you a favour just clearing old stock.

I suspect that's how we ended up with such old units.

I also see that Ionisation units are no longer for sale in NZ, so I've bitten the bullet and gone with a couple of new Quell Photoelectric jobs.
Not expecting 10 years of life out of them, but at least 3-5 years of quiet enjoyment.
