Im now on my third start bulb where the wifi has died.  Is this a common occurrence?  So far 3 different brands, all 7-9w bulbs. All randomly in different parts of the house.  One was around 6 months old, one around a year and the latest I would estimate a few years at best. As far as brands go one was a xiaomi, one a brilliantsmart (I do not like the brilliantsmart products at all, I now have a 100% failure rate on 3 different types of devices from them) and cant remember the other one, some random tuya one!  One was multicolour capable and the other two white.  The bulbs themselves still work but no connectivity at all - resetting them just puts them in their setup loop.

Its making me think its not really worthwhile if Im having to replace them so regularly.  I currently have 10 smart bulbs around the house. I was almost thinking I should get something like this for the lounge/kitchen:  https://www.lykalyte.co.nz/products/wifi-smart-switch-3-switch but then I lose the ability to change the brightness/colour.

No issues at all here with TP-Link Kasa smart bulbs.

Only have 4 of them but they're all over 7 years old now.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

one of the common things that kill these is temperature. do you have them in some type of enclosure with limited ventilation? that could be something to check.

i have killed a few milights and some even cheaper aliexpress ones years ago. switched to hue and have some that are roughly 10 years old, and going strong.

philips now have the wiz line at a much better pricepoint than hue. that may be something to try.

They are all in normal open hanging light fixtures so no real heat issues.  Maybe I just had a bit of bad luck.  Maybe they were too cheap.

I have not had any where the wifi alone has died, its been the power supply, and once I gut it to look its the 400v capacitor for the power supply has failed. Cant reassemble a lamp once its pulled apart to that degree.

Its mainly been the aliexpress choice ones that have failed, but I have had 2 of the older wiz ones fail in a strange way that I think is power supply, but they are still working well enough and its a matching set so I dont want to replace them all right now. One will see it as if I have toggled the power and on the wiz ones that is able to be used to switch between scenes on it, so its possible its the power supply and its seeing brief transients as a switch toggle. The second one of them just locks up when on full bright white.

The only thing it seems you get when you spend more on lamps is more powerful RGB LEDs in them. Also watch the watt ratings on aliexpress ones, as expected they are total BS doing things like adding the warm and cool and R G B ones to get a total when not all of them are on at the same time.

And are you sure the Wi-Fi died, as in have you tested the lightbulb in a different socket, closer to your access point?

In that case you should be able to go back to them about it? You are paying a lot more for the same thing to get that CGA protection so it makes sense to use it.

I have a number of Tuya bulbs all more than a few years old still going strong. Not a single failure.

Four Wiz bulbs in my house, no issues over five years. I do prefer Hue but at one third the price they're a great option.

I still want to hear from the OP, answering my earlier question.

I have a couple of Wi-Fi lights in the garage (because Hue didn't have outdoor floodlights), and they would drop from the network every few days. The only way to solve it was to add a mesh node to another room to increase coverage. I also changed the IoT VLAN to 2.4 GHz only and made the main LAN 5 GHz to reduce interference.

I'm guessing the only way to prove that wifi has died is to factory reset the lamp into AP mode and see if the SSID appears on a device or not. If its blinking but no wifi from it, then yeah, wifi is broken. If it wont get to blink then its dead dead, not just wifi broken.

Yes completely sure the wifi has died in them. The latest one has been reset and cant be picked up by anything. And yes Ive tried it in a different socket in a different room.  This one in particular has been running around 2 years fault free. And yes def have a 2.4GHz network running for them. The replacement is working fine. None of the ones that have died did so in the same plugs etc. All in different parts of the house.

Not really worth my while trying to track down the correct invoice as I most likely bought them in-store and doubt I kept it.

The two new ones I installed are fine.  So maybe I just had a bit of bad luck.  The last one to die still works as a normal bulb so I have it now in my desk lamp just without control.

Correct.  Resetting it gets it into blinking mode but is never picked up, can never see its wifi etc.  It will still work without pairing though.
