Job market is really tough out there atm.

My team and I were made redundant by my previous employer July 2018. Still have not found a new job.

I applied for a job that was exactly the same as my old one and wasn't even invited for an interview.

Not fun at all.

Update: I'm still on the hunt and a bit wary (as well as weary) as we get closer to Christmas that employers are gradually going to start shutting down and have less and less vacancies available.

It is tough out there, I agree. Sorry to hear about your situation :(

There seems to be heaps of work in certain areas, such as in the building sector. Maybe not so much in the telecommunications sector, possibly because a lot of it is being outsourced overseas to lower wage countries.

Still on the hunt, even though I realise it's probably the worst time of the year.
One area that a friend suggested I could look at moving into was Asset Management. I don't know a great deal about it, but if anyone does, can they give me a quick rundown on a potential pathway into it?

No idea. In an office sense it's often associated with facilities management. In a wider sense it goes all the way to infrastructure management. There are study programs for both

Dude - it feels like you're just plucking idea's out of the ether. Asset management is just an administrative aspect that can be in many different fields and departments. Like a function. You could be an asset manager for mobile devices, but that would usually involve knowing about mobile device management, policies, AirWatch, inTune, or something similar. It's not out of this world difficult or anything - anyone could do it that can follow - or better yet - create process.

You're better off finding something you're interested in. Go do some courses on Udacity/Udemy/EdX/Coursera. Find something you like. I do business process stuff, and currently am doing BI, but I haven't ever done that before. You don't have to specialise, just have some core skills. These you can gain doing something you like, it's all transferrable.

Where are you based? Not being in work for over a year is not the usual. There must be some other factors.

Here's the thing, "dude". At this stage I'm just putting ideas out there of things I have seen others doing that interest me or seem interesting. I can't just "do some courses" - I have kids that are in school, I can't just stop working to study something - not at this stage anyway. Later, yes, maybe. I do hear (and agree with) what you're saying about the transferrable skills, however.

I would happily do some online study if I could find the time to fit it all in.

Edit: While I'm here, my wife is looking for something else as well - anyone know of anything going in the insurance sector, specifically claims and/or risk? (again I realise it's a bad time of year to be looking).

Thread bump - as I say it's a crap time of year to be looking for a job. However, when do (most) recruiters/companies return? Obviously not tomorrow, but would it be much of a stretch to say that a good proportion of them should be back on deck from next Monday (January 6)? My wife has applied for around a dozen roles and is waiting to hear back from her applications.

I'd say best case is 13th Monday.

As you know, you have limited employment options if

you can't move

can't commute for hours on end

you can't train

Not trying to be a downer, but it's just the realty.

At least you have a job. You made it past the holiday season, which is a popular time to lay off people.

So you're luckier than the poor sods at Bunnings in Waikanae and Te Aroha

Working next to our recruiters and knowing how that is going, I'd say there's plenty that are working through but not super active at this time of year.

More job ads will go out in January and a lot of them will return on 6th, but it'll be working through the backlog and then looking at the placement of new ads for the new roles that come up as people get back from holiday and throw in the towel.

Keep at it...it's not easy but there are roles out there.

Wow how things change in 6 months! Coronavirus wasn't really an issue in January, and there were still a fair few roles going, with few people looking. Other way around now!

Having said that, I'm still on the hunt. Query, has anyone ever found a new role via Linkedin? Most people I know use Seek, and it's pretty easy to use. Linkedin on the other hand seems a little complex when searching for jobs - you can't filter by the pay scale (for example). Is one better than the other, or are they both much of a muchness?

I've also been doing some online study as well (as I mentioned in the other thread), so hopefully a new skillset will help lead me in a new direction.

A "working from home"-type role would be awesome, if I could find the right one.
