When my alarm went off this morning, it rang once, I picked it up to turn it off before the second ring but the screen suddenly went black with a spinner on it. The alarm had stopped by itself. It remained on the black screen with the "thinking" spinner for four minutes, then rebooted. No other problems observed.

Any idea what happened?

Definitely not an update as I only have about 8 GB free and it's asking for 14.88 GB to be made available for the latest point update...

Checking the logs as suggested, I see "panic-full-2026-05-03-050332" which would have been when it restarted (alarm was 0500).

Searching online suggests that if it happens once, it could be a transient software bug, but if it happens repeatedly it's likely to be a hardware fault.

I will keep monitoring!

lol 😀 😆 so you have not installed the latest update/s due to the handset not having enough memory / storage!

I honestly don't know what to say!

I'm only one point release behind... not multiple major versions like some people I know!

People send me too much crap (or I take too many photos) which fills up space and I have to periodically do a digital spring clean to make space for the next update! Does everyone else not have this problem too?

Nope? I'm only on 128Gb and have around 50gb free. I have over 19,000 photos which I should really trim up a bit though haha

iPhones are so reliable that when they do crash or exhibit some other quirk it becomes forgotten that they sometimes do need a restart just like any other computer.

Loads of people just live with red dots notifying them that they've run out of iCloud storage & thus aren't backing up their photos; have run out of local storage; can't apply the latest upgrade as a result. At least you are actively trying to manage it instead of just passively accepting it.

Syncing photos etc. to iCloud saves a lot of space. It’s $1.69pm for 50GB or $4.99pm for 200GB of storage. When it’s on iCloud you can set it so your local storage only has a thumbnail, when you want to view it again it will download it temporarily. I think favourited or commonly accessed data is kept around longer. It does mean you need a reliable internet connection.

Only if you set it to optimise iPhone storage - not something I ever do but good if you are low on space.
