mkl: Guys don't break on your first month, do what I did today if you want to buy on plan from Vodafone.

Buy iPhone 4 on $40 plan

$619

Pay $40 for 6 months = $240

Break contract after 6 months = $315 (inc gst)

Add them:

$1174

$75 more compared to buying outright, but you get 6 months of calls, txts and 3GB data (till Sept).
So in the end you'll probably save especially since you're going to be purchasing TXT2000, and additional data separately anyway.

Breaking during 0 to 6 months is costly ($506.25). I wouldn't recommend it.

Costs you $75, and all the frustration in dealing with vodafone CS for those 6 months.

All the iPhone plans have insanely high charges past the included minuites as well. Anything beyond 30c is unacceptable to me these days, vodafones overage is still priced like its 2001.

Yeah costs $75 but that's like $12.50 per month for 300 texts, 30 minutes of call time and 3GB of data. Can't get better than that.
I think I won't be going over any of those limits, so it should be ok.

I stopped watching this thread about 6pm Friday and have just caught up. What I am still wondering is what caused the corporate pi$$ing contest that delayed (and threatened to derail) the launch of the 'precious' ?

One theory is an argument over the price. If that is the case, do you think VF wanted to sell the phone for too much, or too little, for Apple's liking?

Definitely too much!!! Our plans are still a joke compared to overseas carriers!

From what i can work out it looks like Apple gave NZ a tiny amount of stock.

Australia got around 16,000 phones (or there a bouts from what I read in the paper)

The flagship vodafone Queen Street store got 56 phones, Newmarket had 4 phones, magnummac had 12 or 24. So I would hazard a guess that apple shipped 500 odd phones to NZ. Perhaps in punishment for the expensive iPhone plans VF NZ were offering.

Any maths geeks got some better figures for NZs initial stock allocations?

The real cause of the issue is anybody's guess. What is clear is that their is insuffient stock everywhere. Media Reports suggest Optus had 100000 preorders and all Australian carriers received around 12000 devices each which is why most stores in Australia ran out yesterday also.

In Singapore you could only get one if you had preordered with no stock being available in stores and in Hong Kong CSL ran out on Thursday night after stores opened at midnight.

I can't be bothered with the "will I, won't I" get one hassle of trying to secure a phone from the next miniscule shipment to arrive in NZ, so have ordered direct from Apple. OK, it'll take a month to get here, but I won't die waiting, just grow a little older.

Me too, it was my birthday yesterday and I've been saving up for one so yesterday was the day! Now I just have to wait...I'm hoping the three weeks was an overestimate and they'll ship them sooner.

Has been challenged as not pre-orders but just registering interest. Some Punters registered interest with all three carriers

Even 500 phones for a population of 4 million, based on the same ratio would mean australia with 16? Million people would get 2000 phones, but they got 12000 (600% more.)

Those in the know arn't talking, and those that don't know are (ie me:-) with that in mind I'm gonna say from what I read and how it unfolded that VF NZ did something to really annoy Apple, and Apple denied stock, pulled the official carrier status from VF and VF NZ flew in stock from Australia to have a 'soft' launch and save face.

With 2 Degrees having a 'major' announcement on Tuesday and their 3G service launching, with very competitive pricing in NZ I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is going to have another official carrier in NZ come Tuesday. If that happens I can only imagine the uproar in Telecom HQ.

Again - All rumors and guessing on my behalf... I have no inside knowledge, but if this unfolds this way, the quote of the year will be VF's PR Man's 'Apple only trusts Vodafone's network for the iPhone' going down in PR history.

It really does surprise me how much of a clusterf..k this all was. First thing you learn in PR is communicate early, and often even if you know nothing.

Vodafone definitely had stock on hand i spoke to a courier he said he delivered the iphones thursday morning to a store. But maybe the numbers were too low so limited the launch so people wouldnt queue at midnight or whatever but probably all stocks are sold right now everywhere so wait for next shipment i guess

Just placed my order for a 32GB, bring on 3 weeks! I feel lost as I just changed jobs and had to hand in my 3GS on Friday. Have to use a Nokia 1208 untill then - its bloody awefull!
