plas: You can set up a US account using the details of a hotel in the states and selecting the no payment option. Also there are a few sites that sell the US itunes card but they normally add another $10 on top of the value of the card.

With a little bit of mucking around you can get your IPad to sync your NZ apps and ones from the US store.

Plas - any chance you can elaborate or point us in the right direction... I currently have both a NZ and US account with my iPhone apps  on the NZ acct and my iPad 3G and apps on the US acct.... pain in the rutt!

Don't ask for a lighter load, rather a stronger back.

PoLiGnAc: Still don't get why they don't launch in NZ at the same time as Aussie, since we're not that far from them, and surely including NZ in shipping date won't hurt them that much in supply to Aussie would it? Or the nasty copyright had different say across the ditch?

Apple is releasing first to countries where it is the distributor. In NZ it distributes through a third party, Renaissance.

The Apple stores have really helped Apple's brand presence in Australia too. They will be keen to fuel that up with the best supply of product they can manage.

Could be any number of reasons they're not launching sales at the same time. Don't forget you can buy online straight from the Apple NZ store, so I don't think it has to do with distribution...probably more about how many/few Oz will get in the first instance. It's often been the case that we are a couple of weeks behind.

danielfaulknor: So is the conclusion that we can't buy pay-for apps in NZ for the iPad yet?

This thread is getting confusing, you can buy apps from the NZ iTunes store with a NZ credit card (on your Mac) , then sync them to the iPad no probs.
You can't do that on the iTunes store on the iPad itself though, unless you have a US account and use the US store. However you can set up a free US account and get free apps from the iTunes browser on the iPad. You need to do this if you want to get iBooks or Pages etc, as they are only currently available in the US app store, but if you want paid apps from the US store, that's where you need the USA credit card/gift cards.

One thing I wish I'd known before buying is the Wifi only model dosen't support bluetooth tethering to share an internet connection from a 3G cellphone. If you have an iPhone there some easy ways around that, but not for my Sony Ericsson v640i cell... Booo.

Jailbroke my iPad today with Spirit, nervous at first but all running smoothly!

Jens mentioned in a recent email to me- tonight that the 3G units should start filtering through by the end of the month. Checking out the micro sim etc

a bit disappointed as far as ToshComputers are concerned... I've been told they're "too busy" to get me a MacbookPro unit with a glossy screen, even after I said I was willing to wait a while. :(

Anyways.. good to hear that buying apps won't be as big of a problem as I thought it was going to be. Quite a few of the apps that I have for the iPhone have been/ or are in the process of, being updated for the iPad.

edit: So far: IM+, IBDb and WordPress are showing as "iPad apps" in my collection

Apologies for the disappointment, but between iPad and Macbook Pro orders we are flat out, and we'd rather not take on an additional order if we cannot give it the attention it would need. Special order configurations are simply not something we can handle right now, so going through Apple, as we recommended, is the better way to proceed. Cheers, Jens

We have all sorts of things in stock, but unless you tell me what you are looking for, we'll ship a bag of gummy bears...  :)

Hey there Jens,

I need to do the grocery shopping so gummy bears actually don't sound too shabby :)

Is the end of the month for 3G iPads an estimate for new orders or pre-orders?

I'd say these would be the "Pre Orders"

Yes and no, as far as the 3G is concerned; the gummi bears are no problem. We are getting a handful of test units in to make sure we understand the SIM requirements and any locking issues Apple might have devised. We will then send detailed disclosures of any functional limitations to all pre-order customers and fill orders for those who are ok with the unit's performance limitations. You need to realize that Apple ships these units only in 1s and 2s, so it is extremely time-consuming to have dozens of people walk into Apple Stores every day and source these items...
