Wow that 5G is very fast!

I estimate that it will be 5 years before the rural Wairarapa sees it (based on how long 4G took) so I can look forward to it on the iPhone 17 Pro!

(Just after 6G launches!)

A lot of it is still only seems to be  3G. Also good luck getting fibre outside of a town.

Considering how third world the power supply is in parts of the Wairarapa, such a timeline  wouldn't surprise me. We have had a lot of prolonged scheduled power outages, extending 6+ hours during the day recently, and had quite a few last year too..

Rebound:

Here is a 5G one I took on Saturday

That's a nice one Rebound!

Where were you when taking that SpeedTest?

I was in Auckland CBD yesterday, and couldn't get a 5G signal anywhere on my Spark iPhone 12 Pro. According to the Spark network coverage map, there's a fair amount of coverage. I wandered around Britomart, Queen Street and Albert Street and along the waterfront near the ferry building, but never got a 5g signal.

From the looks of the coverage map, 5G signal is available outside but not in buildings. My voice & data setting is "5G Auto" and I tried "5G On" as well. I dropped into the Spark store on Queen, but apart from checking that same voice & data setting, they didn't have anything else to offer.

Hi BP,

This was taken on Victoria Street West.  Ironically opposite the Spark office.  Just tested up on Union Street in the CBD and I'm getting 100Mbps.

Don’t get me started on that. Or the shocking state of water supply in the region. 50% leakage not uncommon. The water company I used to work for would have been heavily fines if leakage was anywhere near that level.

For example, Thames Water was fined $250 million for failing to reach leakage reduction targets! Our councils are so slack and unprofessional it isn’t funny.

There's a well known under-investment problem in NZ when it comes to infrastructure build and maintenance. The Wairarapa is also a socio-economically and demographically-challenged area. Everyone wants 5G, perfect three waters infrastructure, and whatever else. They just have a cost and getting them up to standard isn't just a matter of professionalism or will.

Does anyone use the kiwibank app? It’s saying it’s unable to use Face ID to log in. Cheers

Yep I do. I have it working fine with Face ID. There's a logon with Face ID slider in the Security tab of Settings within the app itself. My version of the app is 3.34.0

iPhone 12 (non Pro) arrived yesterday to replace an iPhone X. I'd skipped the XS and 11 because I just didn't see any great improvements, only went for the 12 this year since they put an OLED screen in the "affordable" model (and my X had some mild screen burn-in, a sporadic pink vertical line, and the battery is down to 89%).

First impression are... meh.

It's a perfectly fine phone, but really doesn't seem to be that much better than the 3 generation old model it's replacing to me. The main thing I like about it is that it's noticeably lighter than the X - interestingly that's only a benefit of the non Pro since the 12 Pro is actually heavier than the X (12 Pro is over 15% heavier than the 12).

The change in form factor is very "been there done that", but there's only so much they can do on that front I suppose. I like the look of the square edges, but ergonomically they are less comfortable to hold. And even though it's thinner, the square edge actually makes it look thicker.

Things which weren't a surprise, but are still disappointing: The big notch remains unchanged, there's been talk about sensors and cameras that can be behind the screen for a few years but they still haven't emerged. And I'd hardly called it an "edge to edge" screen, as the bezel is still quite wide IMO. In COVID times in-screen Touch ID in addition to Face ID would have been a nice inclusion to allow fast unlocking while wearing a mask, but they may not have had the development time this year. And I still hate that the cameras protrude past the main chassis.

They say the exclusion of a charger and EarPods is for environmental reasons, but if that's the case I think they should include redemption codes so that people who do require these can still get them as part of the purchase price (or at least a discount code).

Still the fastest, most well made, and easiest to use smartphone - but there hasn't been any real innovation from Apple in a very long time.

I have an X and Mrs Code has a 12 (as of yesterday). Both are in Apple silicone cases. Just weighed them on our kitchen baking digital scales - the X is 197g and the 12 is 192g. Pretty much indistinguishable.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Yes, and I get the same result on all networks. I know its flat but its appalling coverage.

Weight difference of X and 12 is 12g according to specs. 12g doesn't sound enough to notice, but it definitely feels lighter to me (I don't think it's my imagination). I leave my phones naked, so any weight difference is more apparent I guess. The weight difference between the X and the 12 Pro is 13g in the other direction - with the 12 Pro being heavier. So a 25g difference between the 12 and 12 Pro - presumably mainly due to stainless steel vs aluminium.

The X always felt quite hefty after upgrading from a 7. So while weight wasn't the only factor in choosing the 12 over 12 Pro, it was definitely a consideration for me. If the 12 and 12 Pro had been the same weight (or at least closer) it would have been a harder decision as it would have come down to price alone and whether the better camera and LiDAR were worth it.

That is interesting, I find most areas have usuable coverage, however where I live I am lucky to get one bar. I guess this is a downside to living in a mostly flat city
