In that case, how long will it be until supply outweighs demand and we can import some "prepay" iPhones from the US for $700 NZD or whatever it was…

The whole point of buying local is that the iPhone itself will be very cheap (compared with the Nokia N95's etc. of this world) but the 24 month plan is where the cash is for Voda.

This would fly in the face of the nz pc world guy saying that vf nz's prices would kill the parrallel import market for iphones.

Heres hoping its wrong, a 4 digit price I will have to cancel my purchase plans

Even although it was stated that almost every country would have the iPhones at that similar price, it would seem very odd to have one or two that were so much more expensive. If NZ is going to have them retail at 4 digits that is ridiculously higher that everywhere else. Doesn't make sense to me.

Well that would mean Vodafone NZ was given an exception from Apple in the US, whom explicitly stated that the iPhone "will not be sold for more than the equivalent of $199 USD"

I'd love you to point out where that is explicitly stated. As far as I am aware, it was a comment Steve Jobs said in a presentation. Their press release for the US at the time said...

iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T's retail stores and requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers.

Even then they were saying "suggested" but were hinting at the notion of $199 worldwide...not explicitly stating it I believe.

In the presentation video from Apple (available online etc. etc.) at 1hr40mins or so, Steve Jobs says "... and in almost every one of these countries, the price is a maximum of $199, all around the world."

After talking to a source in Vodafone I am getting somewhere close to accurate info.

Expect to pay around $1000 people.

My source confirmed they were surprised at the amount of stock they was available to each store.

A managers meeting was held mid week and orders were placed by managers for there stores on this day.

Staff receive their training just prior to stores opening.

And still no information about the cost of plans!

I would be expecting $1K if they offered it on a prepay plan but not on a contract, looks like ill be parallel importing one if this is the case

Come on Vodafone, the suspense is killing me!

Give us the prices!!!!!

I would say the prices would be cheaper than what we have previously faced in NZ but not as cheap as in the US and others. This simply due to the duopoly structure of the mobile market in NZ. Vodafone would be better off charging a higher price here simply because they can in the NZ market structure, this would give them higher revenue (according to basic economic models). Also due to economies of scale it would have to be more expensive in NZ because there are less people paying for their fixed network operating costs.

I was thinking relatively cheap phone with gouging contract, if the 4 digits is true looks like its a double raping from VF :(
